    Re: Earthwood Mandola Repair

In addition to the advice given above by Jeff Mando, I would check the condition of the bridge plate
  2. Re: Mandoliin pair tuning 'either side of centre'?

I think with a fretted and plucked instrument where you are unlikely to push both strings down with exactly the same pressure or hit both stings equally hard this will happen naturally.

    Re: E strings breaking?

I would check out how the tuner is without tension. If it gets harder with string tension then there is an alignment problem with the post. I agree it sounds like you have a burr or rough spot on...

Re: In need of repair: Peter White mandolin

I don't know Canadian law but in the US you gave him a budget and specific instructions what you wanted done. He did not follow either and violated your contract. It sounds like his cat peed on it...
  5. Re: Minimal Mandolin Content - What is this electric uke?

The body look a bit like some of the electric violins out there. Maybe someone grafted a uke neck onto a violin body.

In what kind of condition is the fretboard wood?
  7. Re: For those that want to build a bass fiddle (NMC)

Bass is my main instrument and James is a valuable resource for bass players trying to maintain there instruments which are far more prone to problems than mandolins. I would love to build a bass but...

Re: Whats this tuning called, any YouTubes?

Another issue will be that the thinner octave strings will sit down a bit compared to the bigger string which can make picking more difficult. A new nut and bridge saddle will solve the problem...
  9. Re: Cleaning up after an outgassed celluloid pickguard

Even taped off I wouldn't use steel wool. Scotchbrite pads work great and arn't magnetic.

Re: Room humidifiers and distilled water

I use several venta ultrasonic humidifiers without problems. I have used an evaporative one and had problems with mold.

    Re: Aaargh . . .

Unfortunately I think many companies give their designers disincentives to consider repairs. Apple is one of the worst offenders. In general, our society has a tendency to ignore the option of...

Re: Fretting sharp on the 12th fret E string

A bad string, a high 13th fret, or the bridge moving are the most likely reasons. Since it is time for a string change, I would do that first. You can check for a high fret by using a straight edge...

Re: Machine tuning - bushings don't fit

Worst case scenario is you plug the existing tuner holes and drill ones for your replacement tuners.

Re: Making a bridge setting jig - good idea or not?

Mandolins typically don't have glued on bridges. Otherwise I don't understand what the jig offers that a ruler and a tuner won't do.

    Re: Fretboard Frets Question

Alternatively you could have it fretted to a key like a dulcimer. That would greatly reduce it's usefuness and bring it's resale value close to $0.00.

    Re: Bindings and strings.

You can use calipers or a good engineering ruler to measure as with wood shrinkage it is unlikely to be a standard size. It is generally safer to go with lower tension strings on older guitars.

Re: Phone Holder for Music Stand

I have an inexpensive phone holder in my car that clamps onto the air vent fine. It should work. Just do a web search for "car air vent phone holder" and you will find several options.

I have with upright bass. I look at chord charts and come up with walking bass lines. I try to visualize where the notes are as I do it.

Re: Anyone heard of Westminster Mandolin?

To me a 50%0price drop is a big red flag. It could be worth the money but I doubt it. If you decide to sell it down the road you would have a hard go of it.

it is a common experience. Rather than putting it down for a while I would suggest try practicing something different. Maybe try doing some sight reading or finger exercises, working on more...
  23. Re: peate mandolin binding on edge of fingerboard loose

Another option is acetone which softens most binding material to the point that it will stick. Some rubber bands and a splint of wood can hold it in place.

You may have to get some different strings or assemble your own set of strings but otherwise I don't see any thing to stop you.
