    Re: Butch Baldassari Tunes

Matt, Two Girls From Galax is called Kitchen girl. It's a popular fiddle tune. That one and Minorsville are out there in tab form.

    Re: Butch Baldassari Tunes

Don, nice picking! That's a great tune. I was picking that at a workshop with a friend when Butch walked in. He said "hey, I know that tune"
A short time later, I got to pick it with the master...

Re: coolest shirt I ever had

Yes, I had one of those too. Very cool design. I also had an Elderly Instruments t-shirt that had all the bluegrass instruments as "elderly" characters. That one was my favorite. I wore them all out.
  4. Re: Does anyone know what tailpiece this is?

A lot of folks like the Orrico t/p. You could always sell it and replace with something you like better.

    Re: Deer antler saddle

I had a mandolin in the shop where the owner wanted me to try several different configurations of bridges/saddles to see which sounded best. We both put the ebony back on.

    Re: Deer antler saddle

This has been discussed in the past. I bought bone at Culpepper bone and knife supply in western NC. It was labeled as such. It could have been from road kill. ;)
  9. Re: New tuners to replace Golden Era tuners on a 2015 A mandolin

I have a mandolin out there that the customer wanted the Stew Mac tuners. I fitted pearl buttons on the shafts to complete the look. I put valve grinding compound on the gears and then turned the...

    1909 Gibson mandolin

I had this nice old mandolin on the bench this week. A little work and she’s ready to go. A sweet sounding mandolin. It looks like Gibson added a decal to the peg head or it was re-necked. It doesn’t...

    Re: Herschel Sizemore passes

So sad. He was a one of a kind. I always loved his music. You could tell it was him playing on a recording without even looking at the liner notes.
    RIP Herschel.

    Re: Tailpiece angle adjustment

Yes, they can move just enough to not close properly. Iíve seen a few that way. I would remove the tailpiece to prevent any kind of damage to the mandolin before bending it. It usually only takes a...

Sorry to see that happened. I recently repaired a cracked top from the same shipping situation.
I think if they see something designated as “Fragile”, that means throw it harder.
  19. Re: 'Leading Off' - Chris Thile Transcription Book

Jake, you do a lot of generous wonderful work. Thank you for that! Chris’ book is out of print. That is very generous of you. What I would like to see is some of Dempsey Young’s work on mandolin....

Just take a rag and slide it between the frets and the strings.
