  1. Re: First Learning Session: Seeking Feedback

I have another friend who is a very accomplished guitarist, and he actually plays the melody quite well - I gave him the Silver Spear to practice, and he had it down so that it sounded great after a...

    Re: D string intonation

Thank you everybody for the help!

I changed the string, and what do you know? It fixed it! (whew).

Thanks again for all your help. Mandolin cafe rocks!
  3. Re: First Learning Session: Seeking Feedback

Thank you so much Foldedpath for your thoughts!
  4. Re: First Learning Session: Seeking Feedback

Eric, he sat down, and it was likely one of the less than full pipes - but it was still dominating. Not sure what to do with that.

    Thank you David! Excellent advice!

    Re: D string intonation

Interesting! I hadn't considered the string possibility! I'll start there. Thank you John and Steve!
  6. Re: First Learning Session: Seeking Feedback

LOL. That's how it felt. But, I honestly don't know. I'll ask him when I see him again. I don't know my pipes. He just called them "pipes."
  7. Re: First Learning Session: Seeking Feedback

    Bren and Jill, excellent advice!

    Thank you both!

    Re: D string intonation

Thanks! The filing issue sounds the more likely to me than the frets as you mention it, since the issue doesn't fluctuate, but gets consistently sharper down the string.

    Thanks!
  9. First Learning Session: Seeking Feedback

So I facilitated my first learning session to clear out the cobwebs, as well as level up my playing so that I can get in on some session action when the sessions start opening up post-COVID (they...

    D string intonation

Why would intonation of one of the two D strings be off?

It makes sense to me that both might be off for some reason, but why one and not the other?

It is solid in D, but one of the two...

    Key/Mode for Irish Sessions

It has been a while for me going to sessions, not only due to COVID, but in general.

Regardless, I'm starting up a learning session, for myself, to get my "sea-legs" again, as well as to develop...
  14. Re: Learning The Basics -vs- Being A Slave To The Basics

At least we aren't learning violin! Such a discussion in a violin forum would be heresy!

    Re: Right Hand Technique

    Thanks!

I get "rule," and just mis-stated, as you say.

I'm really just trying to avoid the "mandolin police" while I have a good time learning to play this fun instrument, thanks!

    Your...

    Re: Right Hand Technique

Thank you, Mark, for explaining this in connection to notation. I suspected some of the connections you mentioned. I will look at my notation more thoroughly to get a clear sense of this ahead of...

    Right Hand Technique

Perhaps this belongs in Irish tunes, since it's about right hand technique for those tunes, but it's a bit technical, so I put it here. Please set me straight if I'm posting improperly:

    I know...

Thanks for the feedback and advice John and Randy! Excellent information.

Re: How Do I Start and Run A Session?

Thanks for your feedback folded path!

Don't feel bad, reflections like this are exactly what I was looking for. I haven't decided on a format, just putting the plan out there to get feedback. ...

How Do I Start and Run A Session?

    Hey all!

I'm in Sacramento, CA. There used to be Irish sessions around town, but they dissipated prior to the Covid-19 lockdown. One of my goals is to use this lockdown to work through and nail...

Re: When to Play the E on the A String?

Yeah, tone consistency is what makes sense to me. There are songs where the shift to the e string makes sense. Also, the e string is distinct - the lower register of those bigger strings make...

Right? And what was up with that hat. She just wears it and doesn't give any explanation about it (at least that I saw), just here I am, wearing a hat like the ones we wore when we were in marching...

Thanks for the video Bren. The video made me remember that I often wonder if the large number of brutal and tortured violin teachers out there made violin people who they are, or if them being who...

Re: When to Play the E on the A String?

Thanks for the recommendation Foldedpath. You make a good point, but with a few exceptions, that little move is pretty simple to do at speed, I think... at least I haven't had to go back to using...
