    Re: Desk clamp hanger?

It looks like this was designed for mic stands - is you mandolin fully hanging from it, or is the bottom resting on the floor?

In any case, thanks for the replies everyone. I suppose I could...

    Re: Desk clamp hanger?

Thanks, I hadn't heard of this. Have you found you can hang an acoustic mandolin from it with no problem? ...I also have a feeling my electric may be too heavy for it, but I can always just get one...

    Desk clamp hanger?

I recently moved into a new place and have been setting up my desk/"studio" area. I thought it'd be really neat to have some kind of clamp hanger so I could hang my mandolins off my desk for quick...
  5. Re: Suddenly the 11th or 12th fret gave up on me

Thanks for the replies and ideas!

That is the one I mean. Are there standard words for differentiating the two strings in a course?

Only the 11th fret doesn't really fret true (and only...
  6. Suddenly the 11th or 12th fret gave up on me

So this is odd. I picked up my mandolin and started playing a piece I had just played a couple days ago with no problems, and suddenly it seems fretting the 11th fret clearly plays the 12th fret note...

    Re: Another Newbie Here

For what it's worth, I got my Eastman MD-315 for under 700 and I'm really pleased with it. To my ears it punches above its weight (I like it better than at least one 515 I played, for example). I did...

Heh, well I appreciate it nonetheless. Unfortunately that's what I thought I did that put it in its current state, they were pretty well recommended and are sort of the only person near me. I'm...

    Re: Greetings, new mando player

Welcome! Anything is okay as long as it sounds good to you, and (to a lesser degree, depending on what you're doing) those around you. It's good to learn about common practices and follow the advice...

    Intonation woes

I recently got my MD-315 set up because the action at the nut was FAR too high (to the point where I was really badly hurting my finger). I'm happy to say that's no longer an issue, but am fairly...

Re: Who makes a good Fiddle/Mandolin case?

This seems odd, I feel like the extra padding would still be good to have especially given the convex shape of the back.

Re: Wegen vs. Primetone vs. Clown Barf

You might consider a blind test with a reveal at the end? I think it'd be interesting to form my opinion with no prior knowledge of which is which.
  13. Re: Advice/Suggestions on characteristics of an ideal mandolin st

Recently-ish I watched David Benedict's video on mandolin accessories, where he talks about the importance of the width/contact area of the strap for him (more surface area -> more stable/less...

Re: Wegen vs. Primetone vs. Clown Barf

I actually just recently bought both a Wegen TF140 (bevelled) and a Primetone 513. Also currently testing out flatwounds on an Eastman MD315. I'm really undecided. I find the difference subtle, but...

    Re: B7b9

Not only is there not a requirement, it's physically impossible on mandolin, heh. I was more worried about being led astray by the weird redirect on the website, but I'm glad to hear my chord...

    B7b9

I was following along with the Autumn Leaves from the Real Book and came upon the B7b9 chord.

    My understanding is:

    B: B D# F#
    B7: B D# F# A
    B7b9: B D# F# A C

    Is that right? I've been...

    Re: Right arm placement

Right, I'm certainly no expert but I've heard a good pick angle is favorable as it helps the pick sort of move "through" the string, and is why some picks have that sort of asymmetric bevel (which...

    Flatwounds on an Eastman MD315

I just had some EFW74s put on my MD315 during a set up just to give them a try and my goodness, I might just keep these on just for the left hand feel. It's incredible. I'm not even super convinced...

    Re: Vice grip fingers

Out of curiosity, what's an example of a bar chord on a mandolin? I usually just do separate fingertips on each string that needs one, or at most one fingertip for two strings (like for an A chord).

    Y. Stern mandolins

I just found out about these, they're rather beautiful and seem to sound pretty nice. Does anyone have any experience with one of these?

...for context, I don't actually play guitar, and I just use an amp with built-in effects...
