    Re: Top deflection under saddle?

I beg to differ, if you bridge is set up very well you should be able to lower it under full tension with your fingers. I can even raise one of mine with my fingers under full tension.. Your bridge...

Re: Ever heard of a "guitar chair?!"

Well it's not worth $430 to me, if I wanted one I would take the banjo mandolin I have and make one. The lack of a volume/tone is not a problem and is cheap and easy to add. I would take the...
  4. Re: Open Back / Old Time Banjos - Comparisons to Mando Builders

I, like Jim have played vintage banjos. Sold the Tubaphone decades ago as it was too heavy. Sounded Great, but too heavy. Still have and play my 1890 Washburn tho. Would love to get one of the modern...

Re: Ever heard of a "guitar chair?!"

Actually it most likely will sound like a mandolin with a magnetic pickup, which isn't too bad actually. It is no longer a banjo as the head won't vibrate, so I think it would be a useful instrument,...

    Re: Pickup options?

Charlie you could maybe use a clip on mic on the mandolin. You wouldn't be glued to a mic stand and the folks you are playing with may be less bothered since it's kind of like a pickup, kind of.

    Re: Pickup options?

While the Schertler is a contact mic, finding the ONE place that is a sweet spot is not easy and may not really be possible. Sound waves take distance to focus, having a "mic" right on top of the...

    Re: Pickup options?

For me there are two sounds using piezo pickups. One is under the saddle, or in this case in the bridge (Fishman)or unnder the foot of the bridge (K&K). The other is under the top, or stuck on the...

    Re: Pickup options?

The tapastring jack eliminates the need to drill and works well so you can have the pickup inside.

I like K&K, and prefer them under the top. I am not familiar with Adeline.

    Re: Intonation Mystery

If you put in a larger zero fret you raise the string height at the nut, so to speak, compounding what you are trying to eliminate. I see zero frets larger and usually replace them with the same size...

    Re: Not exactly Mandolin related....

Billy, filter caps are what filter out the AC ripple after the rectifier, so you have DC for the tubes to work. If you look at them they may have a small dimple on the positive end, but if they are...

Re: Early Gibson - Lefty conversion

A Gibson will convert to lefty just fine. A new nut and new saddle. I am sure you can buy a saddle, but every mandolin should have the saddle intonated to the instrument. A fine tuning does make a...

    Re: Para DI fix/help quack?

I am thinking a good setup is in order. Does it loose volume on the treble strings when played hard acoustically?

    Re: Not exactly Mandolin related....

Power tubes and the phase inverter tube will make the most difference. If the amp is old you may want to check the filter caps too. If they go they can fry your amp. They also have a shelf life of...

Re: Ever heard of a "guitar chair?!"

I bought a folding chair with a 2" padded seat and a curved back. It was way too tall for me so I started cutting the legs 1" at a time until I got it where it was the right height. Now it is...

Re: Tuning up a Traditional Brekke Bridge

I use paraffin for lubrication as opposed to candle wax. Works well. Candles made out of beeswax will hold moisture, paraffin will not.

    Re: Fret sprout question

I'm with John, it is a perfect time to file the fret ends and eliminate the problem in the future. This is fairly common in the life of an instrument, unless it is kept in a very stable environment.

Re: Let's hear your BEST musical joke?

    Re: Old Gibson Mandolin

I agree individual tuners would most likely work better, but I think they would be heavier. An f model mandolin has a headstock that is usually too heavy already. I also like the looks of the plate...

    Re: Electric mandolin.

You are correct for a preamp that is really a preamp. A preamp to boost a microphone for instance, is a real preamp. Most interface units for matching a piezo to a PA are not really a preamp, but...

    Re: Old Gibson Mandolin

Not quite true. When I replaced the tuners on my 22 decades ago there were no other tuners with the correct spacing. Since I didn't want to modify my mandolin, I modified the tuners. Since the...
