Peter Ostroushko: Heart of the Heartland

    Re: 1924 A2Z (?) questions

Maybe larger frets--I don't know. I've played 15+ years and still don't know the difference unless I have 2 mandos side by side. Haha! This one is super easy to play so maybe.

    Re: 1924 A2Z (?) questions

FON 11949 (search the archives and it's just other A2Zs with this FON). SN 74398 (oddly written in pen). Rest of the label is faded to blank.

Yes it has arrow end, worm under tuners.153321

Worm under means the tuning pegs are below the gears?

    1924 A2Z (?) questions

I picked up this mando recently for a decent price. I assume an A2Z, but the label is blank at this point in time. It's really an A2Z right?

The top is pretty shiny. I've owned some other old...

    Re: Favorite obscure/indie mandolin recording

Another vote for David Benedict. Best album in a long time for me: David Benedict and Michael Moore - Each by Side

  7. Re: David Benedict and Michael Moore - Each by Side

This is my favorite album in a long time. Just a guitar and mandolin playing extremely well. Taste and tone=10000%. A nice break from the spazzgrass being played by so many.

    Re: Homer the Roamer

Based on all your tips, I think I was able to piece it together for the most part. I used to slow downer program with the Hartford Thile version and the Memories of John version. Here is my early...

    Homer the Roamer

Anyone have tab for this song? It is Thile and Hartford jamming some years ago.

Sounds and looks great Craig. For those that don't know, Craig does fine repair work too (satisfied customer here who had some work done on my F4).

    Re: Mowry mandolins

Old sound clip of my old Mowry. I've owned 20 or so mandos over the years and if I was smitten with old ovals (or had some extra cash) I would be playing a Mowry again. Love the tone and playability....

Re: Vintage gibson oval hole mandos- on the hunt!

If you want to tame the powerful G string, you might try putting on an adjustable bridge and messing around with different bridge heights. Set the action a little higher for the treble strings and it...

    Re: Nelly Bly

It's a '22 Gibson F4 (adjustable bridge, truss rod) recorded with my iPhone. I love the sustain of a good oval for my style of playing, which is mostly solo in my living room. :)

    Nelly Bly

Just learned this song at a jam a couple weeks ago. Really simple, but a nice tune.
    Stephen Foster, I think.

Re: Buying A Good Mandolin For Under $200

I started with a $50 pawn shop mandolin that was made in Mexico. The next was bent and going through a slow process of breaking. It was brutally painful to play, but it didn't matter to me--I loved...

1920 H1 Mandola. J76s (I think) with the Wegen pick. Alas, I sold this one too.

1914 F2 with J74s and a Wegen CT pick. I no longer own this one, but it was a nice one. Wish I could keep them all.
