Re: Neck shape/feel: "V" vs rounded

I have a rounded, nice C shape that I love, I also have a V shape that I play daily. I think you can get used to whatever you spend time on. Some love the V shape, some don't. I find both...
  2. Re: Have Fishman Piezo Bridge Pickups Substantially changed since

Old tube amps have a high input impedance that piezos need. It's not the 1 meg that a preamp has, but it is usually 100k. Much better than a PA, so they sound decent.

Re: Effects of Heavier E and A String Courses

I use GHS and they come with a 16 so the only really added stress to a normal set is the 11.5. My set is 11 16 27 and 41. I wouldn't worry.

I too miss the guitar classifieds, maybe it could only be by individuals and not dealers.

    Re: Picks for arthritis

They make flat picks with the thumb strap like a thumb pick. I have also found that a thinner pick won't transfer the attack to your thumb as much. Something like a .73 works fine, it has a little...
  7. Re: Stroboclip Tuner TL;DR Tale told by an idiot*, Part 765:

I have a clip on Peterson for the bench, but use the Unitune for everything else. It's very accurate, right up there with the Peterson, and gets about 4-5 times the battery life. I have one I keep on...

    Re: Electric mandolin strings

If you save those balls you can then put them into loop end strings when you need a ball end sting, as the OP does.

    Re: Buzzy note

Maple laminate is a good option, it can be cut with a scissors, it can bend easily, is hard for sound transference, and can be glued to the bottom of the bridge. If that is the way you want to go....

Re: JT's Pix Blue Celcon Pick Review

I also played the BC for years, but thought they were too dark sounding for me. I liked the glide thru the strings. I went to Wegen, I even have them made thinner, and love the sound. They do wear...

    Re: Buzzy note

The recrowning can be done somewhat by angling the nail file and filing each side of the fret. Some nail files don't have the diamond on the sides and the sides could be rounded with a regular file....

Re: Keeping up with the Fiddlers

All good advise. I find a practice to play is to pay attention to when you fret the note and pluck the string. They have to be at the same time. Working on getting both hands to work in unison seems...

Re: Speed Neck on Carbon Fiber Mandolin

I started using scotchbrite when working on electric guitars, didn't have to worry about getting little pieces of steel wool on the pickups. I would tape the pickups, but the little buggers were...

    Re: Flatiron truss rod wrench?

I have several truss rod wrenches, I don't think I have ever had one fit anything. Use a socket and an extension and it will work better then the wrench. Don't know if it is metric or not, but it's...

    Re: Buzzy note

Take something like a dowel or piece of wood and push the fret down while looking closely, does it move back up when you release pressure. If so it will need to be glued in. I don't think any one has...

Re: Old Duff engraving probably Machine ?

Looks like it's been played a bunch. I like that. If you have a dental mirror look inside, you will easily be able to tell if it is X braced.

I agree, just saying inferior stuff has survived for more than 100 years. The stuff the OP showed is so much better.

Re: Is this good for braces?

I have a 100+ year old guitar made by Lyon and Healy, and the first brace you can see thru the sound hole has a knot the height of the brace. It' been working for over 100 years and the top is flat....
  25. Re: Saddle string slots are too low - replace saddle or fill in s

An easy way to space the strings is with a divider. You can mark the out side two and use the divider to walk from inside to outside, or visa versa. Adjust the spacing until it comes out right. Since...
