    Re: 1960s Kay Electric Mandolin

I think this is the same mandolin- $775 BIN: https://www.ebay.com/itm/144675658608?hash=item21af575b70:g:vnAAAOSwmCdi8pkk

    Re: Oscar Schmidt Tremolina

You might be able to push material over a repair before it sets hard to give the glued a roughish texture- otherwise it will be smooth. I have used Sugru over quite large areas and although it has a...

    Re: Oscar Schmidt Tremolina

The seller has sent me this extra bit of information which makes a lot of sense for obvious reasons:

"To satisfy my curiosity, I used this instrument as an excuse to buy one of those narrow...

    Re: Oscar Schmidt Tremolina

Sue, you ought to as well as a Sue! I decided I needed some to fix a case and experimented with it on the mandolin. There are other cracks on the board that have been filled with something that is...

    Re: Oscar Schmidt Tremolina

Here are two better photos. I filled some big cracks in the board using some Sugru black mouldable glue. Some may raise their eyebrows but it seems to have done a decent job. As I mentioned, I put on...

    Re: Stathopoulo Mandolin Bowlback, Ornate

Mick, I put the Tremolina into the flatbacks of note thread as it was suggested to me in a comment. In future, I may well do the same with interesting bowlbacks but I suppose I post in the eBay...

    Stathopoulo Mandolin Bowlback, Ornate

This looks nice but I have not viewed the photos in detail.

  8. Re: Laberte et Magnié mandolin of uncertain vintage

We had quite a ding-dong going with this Couesnon mandolin- the OP was certain it was of a certain vintage while others were less sure. The tuners are known as Delarouelle units. I think this...
  9. Re: 1929 Martin Style C Mandolin with side crack - Worth fixing?

The mandolin looks great- and is now ready for a new era. Jake may have inadvertently suggested a new line of business- "Renta-Talipiece Cover." As Mick mentions, this mandolin is a great starting...
  10. Re: Comments on the Value of Gibson A4 Mandolin with hard case

It is reckoned that Handel tuners were ended on Gibson mandolins in 1917 or 1918, so the tuners on this mandolin are almost certainly original but are not the inlaid Handel type.
  11. Re: Comments on the Value of Gibson A4 Mandolin with hard case

Lovely instrument- with its original case- which also appears to be in fine condition, too! That's a bonus, all right.

    Re: 1960s Kay Electric Mandolin

I was not surprised that it went that high. I took a closer look at mine as it had suffered from the pickguard degrading and there on the right of the pick up was the tell tale sign of corrosion to...

    Re: Sovereign Mandolin

It is coming on really well- a "learn as you go" experience and I am looking forward to seeing the instrument returned to its original glory.

Re: 1898 Martin Style 6. What should I do?

What a magnificent instrument! Cash was invented as barter is difficult and I think it unlikely you will be able to get a guitar that you like that way- even with some cash changing hands but you...

    Re: Oscar Schmidt Tremolina

I have used a brass ball end off a guitar string and used that as a spacer- I have had to file it down to the level of the strings to get the cover on. It has made it easier to play on that course...

    Re: Oscar Schmidt Tremolina

Richard, I did think of that and started to cut some wood to do this then decided that the cover might not slide over what I was making. It is possible that metal or plastic might do the trick as...

Re: 1920ish Martin built? For S.S. Stewart

This S S Stewart labelled mandolin turned up in the UK. It has a British case- circa 1920s and some music from John Dallas- also roughly that date. The mandolin is the same as the one that started...

I have done as you suggest.
I have also finished what I intend to do in terms of tweaks- I have filled a few of the deep cracks in the board but others have already been filled with...
  20. Re: A project H2 mandola: decent in front, horror show in the bac

I think the pickguard may have nothing more offensive than paint around the edge which would come off with a little chrome cleaner and a bit of elbow grease.

    Re: 1960s Kay Electric Mandolin

Jeff, you may be right but I think there will be those prepared to take a chance on it being a reasonable challenge- rather than a mission impossible. These mandolins have the same electrics as the...

    1960s Kay Electric Mandolin

This is the Venetian model that debuted in 1960 but is a few years later as it has the Japanese tuners- not Kluson units.

This mandolin has suffered from pickguard deterioration- it may be an easy...

    Re: Flatbacks of note

It has been suggested I post up this mandolin- an early 1900s Oscar Schmidt "Tremolina" a very rare and innovative design that did not catch on- there is more about that in the thread below:...

    Mick

The bridge is covered by the plate that slides off. As you can see in the photo above, there are four hooks and the strings pass through grooves in the bend- that is the saddle. Now, from my...
