    Re: Crossrock Vintage wood case

Actually Don, if you make the picture larger what looks like it puts pressure on the bridge is in reality a depression so it doesn't add pressure to the bridge.

Re: String distance and identify my banjolin

The set I use from GHS is 101/2, 12, 20w 28w. I tune it like a mandolin. If you can't get lighter strings you may want to buy singles. The 16 is a little heavy.

Re: String distance and identify my banjolin

Since it is a banjo first, I have recommended several times here. Use banjo strings not mandolin strings. I like two sets of tenor banjo strings 10-28. You don't need anything heavier than a 28, and...

    Re: Monel strings

Have any of you monel users tried the Pure Nickel from GHS? Seems to be some of the same pluses as I am hearing from the users of monel strings.

Re: JJB pickup choice for cittern

On a mandolin the pickups go at the edge of each side of the bridge, which is very near the brace on each side. This keeps vibration to a minimum because it's close to the brace. On an X braced...
  6. Re: Tips on getting more volume out of a 3 week old Mando?

Some mandolins have very bright plain strings and I can see the need for the heavier pick. Mine have nice lush plain strings so the thick pick is not necessary and definitely dampens the G string. I...

    Re: Cost for refret

I don't think EVO is as hard on tools as stainless, and you are only doing one. I'd go for it. I put it on one of my mandolins and going to put it on another when I do it next.
  8. Re: Tips on getting more volume out of a 3 week old Mando?

I maybe in the minority, but I like a pick thinner than 1mm. I get better sound out of all my mandolins with a thinner pick. A BC 35 is not thin enough and I don't like how my G string sounds. May be...
  9. Re: Tips on getting more volume out of a 3 week old Mando?

Two people can play the same mandolin, one will be much louder than the other because of technique. I agree with Jim get some lessons specifically about pick technique.

Re: Thile using an SM57 mic

I have been using the same 58 Shure mic for somewhere around 40 years now. Put a new ball on it as the old one was looking bad, but otherwise it still keeps working. This has been in terrible...

Re: Mando & Fiddle: The value of double stops

I prefer double stops to chords and will sometimes play an entire tune with double stops. They are much more powerful than single notes and make a very full sound.

    Re: Tax Day Cometh

In Wisconsin if you don't pay sales tax on something you are supposed to play use tax when you file your income tax. Most people don't, and I don't think it is enforced that much, but it is the law.

    Re: GHS N270 Strings

The mandolin with N270's actually plays easier than the N250's mandolin. The action can be lower on the heavier strings, at least on that mandolin I am able to get really low action and it plays very...

    Re: GHS N270 Strings

I have those on a couple of mandolins and like them equally as well as the N270's. While it lightens up on everything else, they still give you that .016 A string.

Re: Wegen vs. Primetone vs. Clown Barf

I played with rounded picks for several years, they are warmer. I am now using a more pointed pick for a brighter sound and a little less force to my wrists. The rounded picks can have as much volume...
  18. Re: Gibson MB-4 Trapdoor Banjo mandolin info request

Most of the trapdoor banjo's Ive seen were 10" heads. Not to say they couldn't have made some with different size heads, it is Gibson after all.

Re: Tips for repairing bowlback cracks?

You could put it face down and clamp the neck to the bench. If you have a wooden faced vice with leather over the wood you could clamp the neck in the vice. Since you won't be using clamps on the...

Re: F-5 intonation issue bridge placement

I play a Brentrup and while I get MAS I only have to play my Brentrup and it goes away. They are GREAT mandolins.

Re: F-5 intonation issue bridge placement

Stradolin mandolins have the bridge way back from center on the f holes. Just say it was an intentional look and don't worry about it.
  22. Re: Mandolin > K&K Twin Internal > Grace Bix - Help please

I used to use a Schertler years ago, but it fed back way too easily. A mic would have worked better. My K&K sounds very good, it's not a mic, but still sounds very good.

The wound strings are the only difference, plain strings are the same. I have been using the N270 strings since before they were selling them. I was lucky and was in on the trial for these strings. I...
  24. Re: Dead Sounding Strings - Do I have a bridge issue?

Mandolin tops are not all the same, even from the same builder. All bridges need to be fit to the top of the mandolin, yours definitely needs to be fit. If your shop doesn't know this, they do not...
  25. Re: Vega bowlback Need images of these inlays to replicate!
