    Re: Vienna

Scanning through Google and Yelp results, the problem I see is that Vienna has lots of music stores just like any big city, and most will be generic shops that give lessons and sell standard beginner...

    Re: Bowie Mandolin?!?

"Rebel Rebel" is a great rocker and basically two chords most of the way, D and E with just a glipse of A in between. At "they put you down, they same I'm wrong," it's A D Bm E, so not too much more....

    Re: Caged System?

I haven't seen it for mandolin but it's easy enough to do it yourself. Use the bottom four strings from the guitar chord shapes and just flip them over, GDAE instead of EADG. Whether you'd play those...

    Re: Bluegrass instruments

Allen, I'm probably not answering exactly the question you asked. For one thing, Del and Rhonda are so well along in their careers that I wouldn't expect a big change in sound from either. But...

    Re: Silverangel A-style

Skip, Hop & Wobble put that one on the map, right? Sam Bush takes a couple of tasty breaks but Jerry Douglas really turned it upside down. It's gotten to be a very popular tune, judging from YouTube.

Re: Question about used " mint uplayed" instruments

Covered by Nigel Tufnel in the same scene as "these go to 11," right? "Don't even point. It can't be played, ever."

Re: It Slices, It dices, it plays bluegrass

The jokes just about write themselves, don't they? :)

I remember "Pyle Driver" being a known brand 25 or so years ago, when the thing was to fill your car trunk or mini-pickup bed with as many...

    Re: Playing scales daily

I believe you left out the sarcasm tag there. :)

Though if we followed mbruno's routine we'd be well on our way!

It would be fun to know, but at this point I wonder if his scales are loosely...

    Re: Hand-carved F-style mystery mandolin

Thanks! It seems to be "opening up" as they say, or maybe I'm just getting a better feel for playing it.

And unlike the fake graphics, the wood looks better in person than in the pictures. It's a...

    Re: Kentucky km254 (2007)

I had to smile. I'll bet that for many of us, that would be not quite loud and punchy enough.:)

But I'm glad that you've been able to find mandolins that suit your taste.

Thanks for the encouraging comments, everyone!

Yes, the case was included. And that did figure into the calculation of whether it was worth taking a shot on it. I've looked at F-style kits and...

Thanks Mike! We had an exchange about chainring bolts in the cycling social group a while back, so you're one of the ones I had in mind. Three not counting you and me. :)

    Hand-carved F-style mystery mandolin

I had some time this evening to get some pictures of the new mandolin I got off eBay a few weeks back. This model has been mentioned in a few topics including one that I started myself when I first...

Re: What scales are "common" to practice?

Well put, John. In Chris Thile's mandolin techniques DVD, he presents the melodic minor rather than natural minor scales. So you play a different set of notes going up than you do coming back down....

Re: Brad Paisley has 25 guitars

I thought you might be making a clever reference to a song I hadn't heard of there. Google can't find it if so. But if Ray Stevens hasn't written a song called "Stranded in Branson" yet, he needs to...

    Re: Ry Cooder: Electric tiple?

Yes, that's exactly how Vox Mando Guitars are normally set up, simply an octave higher than the usual 12-string guitar arrangement. That's definitely what it is. You can read it right down the middle...

I watched this a couple of times this afternoon, and something odd happens at 6:59. It sure looks to me like he breaks that string on purpose!

That's some amazing playing and would be even today....
