    Re: Electric mandolin strings

Thanks, all. I bought a set of flats from Emando. I might try a heavier gage e string to get the volume more even. Single strings aren't hard to get.

    Crazyquilt and steve-

I'm going by Sweetwater later today - I'll check on a single string. Thanks!

Thanks, Bill. I'd seen his ads for instruments, didn't know he sold strings, too - choices, even!

    Electric mandolin strings

I'm down to my last set. Who sells ball-end sets? My usual sources, Elderly and Sweetwater, don't seem to carry such a thing. (I could buy single strings and make my own sets, of course.)

    Roll On Buddy

Definitely not a bluegrass version - last solo is electric mandolin.

    Re: Best Flat-top/Pancake/Army Navy Mandolin?

I bought a used Big Muddy for $400 couple months ago - it's fine.

I played a Goldtone flattop (GM10) recently. Not bad (but thick finish and changing the strings is said to be difficult). $600...

    Roving on a Winter's Night

First recorded by Doc Watson. I was reminded of the song by Hannah Sanders' and Ben Savage's great recent version.

  12. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

I've used a TC Unitune for several years. It's been on and off many instruments, in cases, in my pocket and it's still holding up really well. Small and inconspicuous it's not, though.

  13. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

I prefer a big honkin TC Unitune. Bought a mandolin that came in a case covered with stickers - fine by me. I also dress funny.

  15. Re: Extreme newbie stringing/tuning questions

The twisted string is not ideal, but it will probably work, but might not stay in tune that well if the wraps slip past each other. You can loosen it up, reorient the string with forceps or pliers,...

A friend of mine is a model train collector. He went to a show and asked to look at a particular item. The vendor said, "Sure, but if you get a good look at it, you'll need to buy it." Which was...

Re: Rearranging strings on a mandolin?

I often play A as G 2240 E, barring the G and D strings with 1st finger. Am is 2230. If the E string rings it's fine, since it's part of the chord.

In some cases you might want to mute a...

    Feedback buster for Big Muddy

I don't think I've heard a minor-key Hank tune before. It reminds a bit of Dylan's Man in the Long Black Coat.
