I might have attempted that if I had a drill press or vise. Drilling into a small rounded piece of steel isn't trivial if you don't have the tools. Maybe I could have ground a flat spot and used some...

I ended up finding a different seller on amazon with the same schematic drawing and those fit perfectly, then as I was restringing I noticed one of the posts for the G string course didn't have a...
as far as I can tell by measuring they conform to this schematic (which the item i was shipped by amazon didn't match) 194502
so I assume it's some kind of common form.
I've actually just had one of the buttons break on it but finding an exact match I think will be impossible, so I bought a replacement set off amazon, which were not as described, the hole distances...
I can't bring myself to pay $1000 for an instrument I haven't played, so driving around a bit to try some is fine with me. If it doesn't feel right in your hands it's not worth the money in my book....
whatever is cheap ;)
sorry I guess I used a term not familiar or vague, since a few people have mentioned it, I meant before WWII.
I've heard the term pre-war used to describe blues and country music before, buildings,...
I've actually done some computer work for Josh Bell from the pvd mandolin orchestra. They are a classical type outfit, not currently interested in this kind of thing. I've asked around for a few...
thanks for the tip, guilford is around exit 60 I think, not that far away. Probably won't have a chance until 2015 though.
I play old-time so I have no problem with the oval hole, I was just wondering "the reasons" some of what I guessed at. I gotta go somewhere I can play one in person and drop some cash on something...
I look around on forums and ebay and what not and see almost 100 year old gibson A-style stuff for what I'd consider fairly cheap considering the power of the brand name and age, why is it one mando...
hope it's ok to bump a 3 year old thread, but there is an old-time jam every 2nd and 4th Mondays at the South County Museum in Narraganset. Always looking for more people to participate, all levels...
don't forget to have fun
ok thanks guys, I finally brought the mandolin home I'l do some shopping today. I can't glue the peg back together unfortunately.
I assume these are molded on there hot and trying to glue it back together isn't going to work out. I have 4-in-line tuners so replacing the entire side is possible but what are other possibilities...
Just ordered the back issue with that Old-Time Mandolin article in it. Lot of good reading in this thread.
honestly, no one.
I got a cheapy Rogue in a package deal and took about 3 years to actually start playing it. I guess old time fiddle tunes are my influence now.
nothing wrong with free
unfortunately what I love is drinking booze alone in bed.
this figures. this is the same store I was talking about that had exactly one $150 mandolin any time Ihaev bothered to check it.
I found an album of String Ragtime tunes called String Ragtime: To Do This You Got To Know How and man these is some red hot mando and guitar playing on this thing! Anyone know of any other such...
the CG I go to most often has exactly 1 mandolin a $150 black Ibanez. I assume it's never been touched.
I play old time it'll never matter
I've played for free here and there (not including benefits etc) while just picking up a gig on tour rather than take the day off with hopes of selling merch, or just locally to have a good time and...
I'm thinking about it, I'm in providence so not a long drive. I am kind of only interested in participating in old time jams though, and it's raining and it's $20 and parking blah blah. It's also...
