Well done Bud! Welcome to the forum!
There’s an oval Eastman in the classifieds for $500 right now (NFI).
You might also want to keep a lookout for a used Morris. Sonny makes great mandolins.
I ran octave pairs on the low strings for the last couple of months on my GBOM and really liked it. However I restrung it Monday with unison pairs to run that way for a few weeks before deciding...
I really like the D'Addario NS Tri-Action. Tension is adjustable and it’s super quick and easy to install and remove.
My last email from them (last Thursday when they confirmed they could change my order to carbon timber without impacting delivery date) said they were still targeting end of this month/early May for...
My ear isn’t all that sophisticated but I liked the sound of the carbon timber and went ahead and upgraded. I didn’t want to be sitting here in a year regretting that I didn’t get the one I wanted,...
Congratulations on the resumption of your musical journey!
I love the OM and probably play it about 80% of the time when I’m solo. I still play the mandolin more when playing with a bunch of guitars.
That was my reasoning as well- if I’m traveling light I could just carry a uvive wireless and the mandolin and be able to plug into a PA without carrying a pedal.
I think the key for me is the difference between memorizing the song vs memorizing the notes. The song is the sum of the groove/rhythm, the melody and the lyrics and the emotions that accompany them....
Thanks for the update Ian! Super excited to get my new mandolin…
Being the two outside strings I suppose you could pluck them both with thumb and pinky of the strumming hand… but I’d probably just strum it and hope for the best :)
(Speaking as a newbie)
Is there something wrong with the neck currently?
I was planning to try the other direction, medium plus Sam Bush monel, to see how that sounds.
But I have had no issues switching string types on my Morris which has no truss rod, so I didn’t...
I ended up with a Pono 23” and a converted Eastman (guitar) 23.5” GBOMs at a very reasonable price (each less than $1000) from the classifieds. Both are excellent to my hearing. I was targeting a...
Where is the statement that the carbon timber has a different tone? I had assumed it was just a cosmetic difference. If there is a significant tonal difference I might consider upgrading.
I did...
My recommendation would be to go ahead and set up your mixer and one or more PA speaker and set up a GoPro or other recording method to actually hear what it sounds like out at audience position. I...
I had that same thought. I still like the idea of being able to plug directly into a portable speaker or house PA without needing my pedals while traveling so I think I’ll go with the preamp and hope...
Glad you finally found your oval! It took me a minute to remember that we swapped BRW pics a year ago. Not many ovals out there!
I don’t know about the strap, but as the happy owner of a BRW two-point oval, I’d love to see the side-by-side pictures of both mandolins :)
The post about taking a mandolin on a ski trip has me thinking I’m glad I’ve got one of these on order. I think I’ll bring it along on an Alaska fishing trip this summer.
Space blankets provide almost no insulation. They reflect body heat, but that isn’t going to help your mandolin :)
I’d love to try a shorter scale length sometime. I am playing a 23.5” GBOM (converted from a 3/4 size Eastman guitar) that I love, and a 23” Pono that I also love but sadly neglect. 20” sounds like...
Perfect use case for a carbon fiber mandolin :)
I had my octave along on an ice fishing trip a couple of weeks ago and had no choice but to leave it in the car the last day while we fished a half...
There’s no question that skills are best when completely unimpaired.
However, relaxation and lack of inhibition can contribute to the overall musicality - if the performer is relaxed and having fun...
A former bandmate has sent me a few videos recorded with Acapella and it works well but functions as described above. I downloaded the free trial and then discovered the relatively high subscription...
