    Re: Shop questions

Every section of my house is geo thermal. In the winter months depending on the room, it is between 68 and 74, in the summer pretty much the same but the rooms that are cooler in the summer are...

    Re: Shop questions

I know what I would like in it based on what I have and the larger projects I am doing. Maybe I am overthinking it, if I was building someone else's shop I would have already finished but for my own...

Re: Left Hand on Neck: Palm or Thumb

196503196504That vid looks similar to how I hold mine. The neck does not go all the way down into the V of my thumb index finger area. It test more on the palm to finger jobs so there is light behind...

    Shop questions

I now have access to more room. To decide what to use and where I have a few questions. What are the things you like about your workshop and the things you dislike? What would you change if you could...

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

I hope so but I didn't buy it for that just thought if anyone here was looking they might get some ideas. I need to make items now to sell and make some cash on. I can't make it trying to make...

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

I don’t cut petal just wood. Maybe someday. I suppose I shouldn’t have posted it. I thought it was interesting what the local electric instrument guy used it for the pickup route truss rod jig...

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

After comments here about them in another thread, I thought it was a good way to go to get my feet wet. Not a 3D CNC but functional and if you work on layers you can work some 3D objects. Once it...

196467196466Not Mandolin related yet but hopefully some inlay at some point. Learning this beast and affinity designer. My first attempt at a larger engraving.

    Re: Mating strings to mandolin

I guess I'm the odd guy out. I chased strings at first also but I settled in on a set and ran them a few years and for a change tried something new and found I liked it better. So I tend to stick...

    Re: Mating strings to mandolin

Four months in and fifth strong change? Are you playing a lot. Some people go through them quickly. I’m not one of them. I would suggest when trying new strings to at least use the same ones for a...

    Re: Mating strings to mandolin

I do whatever sounds good to me. If Bright and Bright make brighter and I like it I do it. If bright and dry sounds better to me I do that. What sounds better to you is the question. Whatever it is...
  12. Re: What did you goof up when building your first mandolin?

    You made me laugh, thankyou!
  13. Re: What did you goof up when building your first mandolin?

Aren’t you the only John here with a load of experience?
  14. Re: F-5 intonation issue bridge placement

How does it sound? If it sounds good then I would call it good!
  15. Re: What did you goof up when building your first mandolin?

Not a great idea to put your number on a public forum. People here seem good but there are a lot of lurkers and boys everywhere. You’re just asking to get a ton a junk texts and calls now. I would...
  16. Re: What did you goof up when building your first mandolin?

Of all the things I could do it was a flat top ten string and the thing I messed up was the hole alignment for the tuners. I tried to use a drill press that wobbled! It was horrible. But they were...
  17. Re: Dead Sounding Strings - Do I have a bridge issue?

The junk folder may be caught it and it was missed. His email is in this thread and instructions for the subject. I would try again.

    Re: Memorizing a song

Yes, I have noticed within hearing the first couple notes it comes back to me. I have to be very careful though as there are a couple of parts where my fingers want to do something different, to me...
  19. Re: Dead Sounding Strings - Do I have a bridge issue?

I do not but I would look for the original thread and post in it and send a PM from here. Someone in the builder section may know or have permission to share it.
  20. Re: Dead Sounding Strings - Do I have a bridge issue?

Bingo! For all appearances, this bridge was never fit to your instrument or strings. Garbage work. Get the mandolin setup pdf from Rob here, there are a few threads on it! If you are a little handy...

    Re: Memorizing a song

And there in lyes tue crux of my issue. I just haven’t been able to remember the tunes, playing or humming. I will need to really drill them into my head somehow.

    Re: Name that wood

When I picked it up my first guess was ash but it is so heavy I second guessed myself and wondered about white oak. Tele would be cool but an electric mando might be cooler!
