  1. Re: Mandolin for Dummies/Mandolin Exercises for Dummies

I've seen this link referenced elsewhere, and then, as now, I get "ERROR 521 The Server is Down"
Is it safe to assume it's working for you, Simon, since you put up the link?

Is it too late to change your mind? Has it already shipped?
  3. Re: Article: New in Print/Kindle - 12 Easy Christmas Songs for Ma

Dang, I don't need any more music books, but I might need this. :mandosmiley:
  4. Re: Mandolin for Dummies/Mandolin Exercises for Dummies

I've also got a copy of Tristan Scroggins's new How to Play Mandolin in 14 Days - Daily Lessons for Absolute Beginners.
I would venture to say it is useful also for beginners who are not so absolute.

    Re: Bag or case

I have a Gator case like that (foam covered with nylon-ish material), and I took it on a plane with me last spring. It fit fine in the overhead bin, but I did make sure that the stuff in front of it...

    Re: Books About Mandolins

That's a bummer. I was just starting to want a copy of that book, but I'm no fan of e-books. Hope it goes back into print.

  8. Re: Mandolin for Dummies/Mandolin Exercises for Dummies

I've been playing a little over a year and half, and I just got Don Julin's book a while ago. I started using it recently and like it alot. I've got the exercise book, too, but haven't looked at it...

    Re: Monel strings

I bought some of these to try. It will be my first string experiment! I only got as far as taking the tp cover off the SOL, so I'm gonna wait until these arrive. :mandosmiley:
  10. Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

Hmm. I didn't know this. The case it came in is a rectangular foam one, and it's kind of cool but a much worse fit. I probably won't be going anywhere with that mando anytime soon, though....
  11. Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

Just tried the F2 in the Gator case I bought for the Morris. It appears to fit pretty nicely, and that was a pretty inexpensive case.
The whole neck is pretty much sitting flat on the support.

    What a cool story!
  13. Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

Won't work for me, either. The case is molded foam. Guess I gotta start saving my pennies and get a case instead of another instrument ;)

Thanks for posting this, Bazz Jass. I just realized I have this issue, too.
  15. Re: Does your mando need a setup? Learn to do it yourself!

Awesome book. If you're handy at all, it will give you direction and confidence to tackle the job; if you're not, you'll know what you're talking about when you take it in to a professional.

Re: Is this how it starts?

    That's pretty funny :)

Don't think I need to indulge in any modifications. A couple more string changes, and I should have it down to a science (I hope!). Next time I'll try using a piece of...

Re: Is this how it starts?

Yes, that is what I ended up doing, wedged a small flathead screwdriver between the bottom of the tailpiece and the lip of the cover and then turned. It still wasn't easy.

I got the SOL out the other day, because I felt it needed some attention and didn't want it to "fall asleep" ;) . I'd decided to change the strings, and I spent over an hour fiddling around with the...
