Re: '30 Epiphone Tenor - Mansion on the Hill

Not quite a zombie thread, but I thought I'd resurrect it.

I have been playing your version of this since you posted this on July '20.
I started playing this in public about two months ago and it...

Re: The Humours of Ballyloughlin - Mandolin

    Pluckinstrings:

    Thanks for the sheet music.
I was looking for something like this for my repertoire and this is perfect.
It's sounds good with Strum Machine also.

Re: Do you name your instruments?

Named one after my late mom.

Many years ago named one after a lovely girl I knew.

    Re: A little pickup advice?

    I'm measuring 1/4".
I mounted the pickup in a really unscientific way BTW (and with foam tape).
It turned a poor sounding instrument into something great.

    Re: A little pickup advice?

Have you considered a surface mount pickup?

I have the wickedbucker and it sounds great.

    Re: Kala and Ibanez

I have the Kala Tenor. (tuned CGDA)
It's such a well made and beautiful sounding instrument.
But the tenor sound is just not part of what I'm doing right now. So it sits.

    I'm a baritone uke fan...

Re: Want to take up the cello

I played cello as an adult for a few years in a community orchestra. So much fun.

I gave it up when the Great Recession (remember that?) became a thing.

The cost and time spent was better put...

    Re: nylon stringed mandolin

I think the instrument was poorly made.
The volume is at least 1/2 of what you would expect.
And very little tone. Just "pick on string" type of sound.
I electrified it with a humbucker and it...

I had this custom made by Bruce Wei last year. 19" Archtop baritone uke tuned CGDA
I still play it a lot but it is disappointing in many ways.

Re: The Blackbird on a Kmise tenor guitar

    D'Addario nylons .035 .029 .0402 .028 (CGDA) work great on 20.25 baritone uke

I have the Kala tenor 21.5 that I'd like to experiment with. I'll give your idea a try.

    Re: Backwards Guitar Solo?

I seem to remember a few YouTube videos about George Harrison's backward solos.
    They were pretty detailed.
    Sorry can't give a link.

    Re: A medieval citole

    Thanks.
I'm absolutely sure your instruments are the major factor in the sound your getting, but I can hear those strings.
I may try those Oud strings on one of my single course mandolas.

After listening to this video a few times, and some of your other videos I'd like to ask what kind of strings you are using.

They have a really interesting sound.

    Are they commercially...

    Re: Gear for Electric Mandolin

Do you like the Behringer VD400 delay? I'm thinking of getting one.

I just got my Behringer TM300 today and I'm in awe.
My edola has a very "Wes Montgomery" sound now.

    Re: Gear for Electric Mandolin

Right now just a Tube Screamer clone set lightly enough to thicken the tone.

I've watched a million YouTube videos but every demo is about shredding so it's hard to judge.

    I have this on order:...

    Re: Pros/Cons - 4 vs. 8 strings

Yes we drifted a bit off topic.

For me baritone ukes CGDA in nylon or steel works well.

Any nylon string will do I would think.

Re: Do You Have Too Many Instruments?

That video is 42 years old.
I'd like to know what happened to that collection of dirty old banjos.

Classic hoarder behavior BTW. That wasn't about the instruments at all.

    Re: Pros/Cons - 4 vs. 8 strings

The D'Addario's are their "plain vanilla" nylon strings so they are easy to find.

They tune up easily with low tension so I think the Martins would be OK.

    Re: Pros/Cons - 4 vs. 8 strings

On both I use guitar strings.
    The A D G E strings to get C G D A. The tension feels very good.

one has nylon classical guitar strings D'Addario EJ27N
The other has Ernie Ball Earthwood Silk and...

    Re: Pros/Cons - 4 vs. 8 strings

My Eastwood Airline mandola lost 4 strings a while back. It didn't need them.

I also turned two Baritone Ukes into 4 string mandolas. (love the wide necks)

Then I bought a tenor guitar.

    I'm...
