    Re: Shopgoodwill.com Eastman 604

A quick look showed that [pickup] is $300. If it's working, that might be a nice rig, but if it's not, you've got a $600 mandolin with a hole in the side. (There's a non-pickup'd 605 on the local CL...
  2. Re: Neapolitan Mandolin Build in Naples - November 2022

I remember hearing about that when it was appearing on [mostly acoustic] guitars, but I've noticed that Caterina Lichtenberg's mandolin has one, so it certainly suggests that they're not out of place...

    Re: Shopgoodwill.com Eastman 604

I don't think they ever came from the factory with an XLR jack. I wonder what is, or was, inside that thing? The earlier ones did not have pickups, and the most recent ones just have the K&K with...
  4. Re: I like big triangle picks - no, wait...

Make sure to try out both "grip" and smooth versions of the Primetone picks, as they have a different sound ("grip" is slightly less dense, due to the pressing process used, or so I read). They come...

Re: Eastman md 304 vs 314

You might try contacting Eastman directly and asking about current finishes. They've been good responding to short questions I've sent them.

There used to be a blurb somewhere on their website...

    Re: Waxing the mandolin

No. it's primarily the automotive products, and (at least historically) sprays like Pledge that you have to be concerned with. You can find the data sheets on almost any products with a bit of...

    Re: Eastman 305 & 315 blemished

? I didn't say anything about buying new. (Both the Eastman I gave away and Northfield were "previously owned.")

    Re: Eastman 305 & 315 blemished

What others say - save your money. Unless your current mandolin is really impeding your progress, or you've developed to the point where you really need something different, time is better spent just...
  9. Re: Ain't in it for my health; a film about Levon Helm

Well, it was a documentary film and my opinion is that the editing probably focused more on the sense of injustice around The Band songwriting/publishing rights, and their impact on his current...

Re: Tell me why not: Carbon fiber bracing.

I think a laminated/sandwiched brace would be easier to work with, and on a flat-top instrument, probably avoid the dust problem. Just using CF seems like it would mean resorting to something like...

Re: Sleep with One Eye Open

    The Thile+Daves CD is great.

(I did some poking around on Spotify, and didn't find any old recordings of Ookpik, which seems to always stir things up for some reason? - Anyway, personally, the one...
  12. Re: Long-winded general questions from a mandolin newbie ...

You don't say what kind of music you're playing (that needs a pickup), so unless you are fixed on an F-style or F-hole, arch top, Northfield makes a flat-top, oval hole model that's basic, but well...

    Re: Beginner Mandolin Questions

It may depend on what kind of learner you are, i.e., whether you need feedback to help correct things, and if you do, whether the timing and immediacy of that feedback matters. I have not used any...

    Re: Easiest to learn DAW

Kind of repeating myself, you have to start with the basics, and then actually *do* it to develop some competency, and the "reward" is not as tangible (or subjective!) as playing.

    If you begin...
  15. Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

This seems a little steep, even for Japan, but I confess I have not been looking at these.

  16. Re: Blue Chip CT 55 versus Dunlop Prime Tone 1.4

The print on Primetones is just that, not even a mild bit of depression/etching like a Fender pick, and it will wear off really fast. The Fender pick in the attachment is pretty old and probably saw...
  17. Re: Blue Chip CT 55 versus Dunlop Prime Tone 1.4

I still use the Primetone (1.5 large triangle "smooth") exclusively on guitar. I use an Apollo (Mike Marshall) pick on the mandolin for the bluegrass stuff - it really just sounds better to my ear....

    Re: Easiest to learn DAW

I don't recommend Audacity as a DAW anymore, though I first recorded with it. It's great for quick editing and such, though.

As @foldedpath says, you have to spend some time, regardless of which...
  19. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

Looks like a decent kind of German factory "fiddle" but I have no idea of the market for these things anymore, and the prices can range quite a bit, depending on some things not obvious to the lay...
  20. Re: Do I round off my bridge or stop touching it?

I've rounded the corners (small file followed by increasing grit sandpaper) on both mandolin bridges enough to make them unnoticeable. It doesn't have any impact on the bridge stability, and with a...
  21. Re: Vintage A-4 Mandolin Low Serial Number (Early Production)

$850 + tax/s&h. Still there, if anyone is interested. (BTW, GC has a 1915 all in one piece, though fairly rough looking for less than 2x the price. I *have* stared at that one a couple times, and it...
  22. Re: I canít remember if learning guitar was this hard

I took a swing at mandolin probably a dozen years ago or so, and thought it would be fairly straightforward, since I knew my way around the fiddle a little bit. But, after a couple weeks of playing...

    Re: Pioneering Women of Bluegrass

"The Definitive Edition" of this album is out (digitally) and contains 28 songs. You can get a download (even FLAC) at bandcamp. Great album.

  24. Re: violin buying question to you trusted cafe goers (NMC)

You can't make generalizations about fiddle setups any more than you can make generalizations about the fiddling style, as it varies by type and region. Around here, flatter bridges certainly were...

    Re: Waxing the mandolin

A good quality wax (designed for wood finishes) is unlikely to change the tone of the instrument. It might make it shinier, and it will protect the finish from some things like moisture (sweat!)...
