    Re: 6-on-a-plate 12 string tuners

If you need 5 on each side, 10 string machine heads, do a search online for machine heads for charango, bajo quinto or Puerto Rican cuatro.
  6. Re: Interesting picture of WW1 Russian mandolin / mandriola

Good spot! I wonder if this means these soldiers (or just the balalaika player*) are Ukrainian? It was all part of the Russian Empire at the time, and the 6 stringed ones are more common in Ukraine...

Thought this unusual mandolin with it's triple (or more) stringing and interesting body shape and soundholes might interest you here.

Found the pic on this link:...

Re: Irish bouzouki damaged in transit

This looks to me like large/sudden changes in temperature or humidity during transit?
  10. Re: what glue to use on 70yo mando w/ previous repairs?

    Hide glue.
  11. Re: Renaissance cittern with 1/4 comma meantone fretting

I haven't, as I only have a slight knowledge of Turkish music theory. I know more about Persian music theory.

    Re: My latest oud

Hi again. Further to my previous answer, I found a collage which I made whilst making an oud arbi a few months ago. Different instrument but same process:

    Re: My latest oud

    Thanks!
The scale length of this oud is 58.5cm, which is standard for Turkish (and some Arabic) ouds. This is otherwise built more like an Arabic oud than a Turkish one. I was mainly inspired by...

    Re: My latest oud

I build using a form. I have all different sizes of forms hanging on the wall of my workshop for the different instruments I build.

Re: Seeking a virtual program where we can jam

I recently tried a program called Jammr (jammr.net) which worked well but is equally 'quirky' (requires some fiddling). Might be something you could also give a go.

Re: Minuscule mandolin on eBay UK

I saw this a few days ago and was also tempted but not at that price since it'd be a cute/fun thing and probably too small for my fingers.
  18. Re: Renaissance cittern with 1/4 comma meantone fretting

Sorry, I made a typo! This instrument is in fact fretted in 1/6 comma meantone, but what was said above by others still stands. Essentially, it means that the instrument plays more in tune in some...

    Re: Baroque mandolin

That's the customer playing, not me. It took me about 2 months to build. Difficult to give an exact number of hours as I always have at least 3 on the go, otherwise I'd spend the whole time waiting...
