Bill,
It's built with violin style overhangs (no bindings), violin f-holes, and violin purflings. Bit of a stretch maybe, but that's my story.......

I combined the two and came up with this. I built it for last summer's Memphis Guitar Festival.

David,
Plain ole warm water will dissolve hide glue, if that helps. I think vinegar will work on any aliphatic glue, but I'm not sure about hide glue.
After lots of other projects, I'm finally getting close to finishing this one.

Hopefully I'll get the strings on and a preliminary setup this weekend. Of course I've been saying...
My bad, it wad Catulpa, not Paulownia.
I have no personal experience with it, but I do know that Bruce Sexauer built a very nice guitar (top and back/sides) from Paulownia and got very good reviews. Of course, pretty much everything Bruce...

A few in the white of my first foray into the mandolin world. I had it strung for about 6 weeks and played with it quite a bit, making tweaks here and there, unstringing, restringing, etc.,etc. I'm...
Austin,
Are you bringing that one to Memphis?
A little thin CA in a pipette or the end of an old .010 or so string should do it. No clamp necessary, just hold it down for 4-5 seconds with the end of the pipette or string and the CA will dry...
Progress on my 3-Point 2-Point. I'm considering finish alternatives. As you can see, I've built the body in the style of a violin, so I think the finish should be somewhat in keeping with this style....

Andrew Mowry had a wonderful tutorial on binding an F5 in a GAL Quarterly not too long ago. It's very detailed with great photos.
I'm working on a couple of instruments for next summer's Memphis Guitar Festival. It's a new event and should be a lot of fun. A Gibsonesque 00-NL Euro Spruce/Maple and a 2 point mandolin with 3...
Rick,
Lots of ways to do this , but I do it the same way you do. Takes about 10 minutes. It's what I'm comfortable with, but it's certainly not the only way.
Bob is a great guy and is very easy to do business with. Highly recommended.
Doug,
I use a HVLP conversion gun that I've had for about 8 years from Harbor Freight. These get mixed reviews and I'll admit the quality is hit and miss, but generally speaking they are pretty...
I'd just carefully sand the dots down until they fit. Shouldn't take very long.
IMO the SN 2199 does have bar frets. If you look at the profile of the two photos, you'll notice that the frets in SN2199 are basically rectangular with rounded edges and are considerably narrower....
Depending on the amount of accessible space you have available, wood wedges may be an option for the cracked braces. Make 2 wedges of the appropriate size, anchor the first one w/double stick tape...
Austin,
Did you ever give the EmTech finish a try?
Here's something that has worked for me. I use Z-Poxy Finishing Resin to porefill most of my instruments. When I'm going for a vintage look, I just apply it over the bindings and leave it. (no...
John,
I do have quite a bit of bar fret stock that's got a very gentle radius, nowhere near enough to use "as-is". I've had it for quite a few years as it doesn't get used very often. I know LMI...
James,
Does it look like it will work on bar frets?
Michael,
If you only need enough fretwire for 5 frets, I'll be happy to send you enough bar fret stock for that. Measure the thickness with a caliper and let me know the thickness (Most Martin...
