  1. Re: Quintetto Anedda’s new album from Brilliant Classics!

I love this album, and an interesting approach: quartetto romantico plus orchestral bass.

I only discovered this post by searching the forum for references to this recording. I was going to post...
  2. Re: Sebastian de Grebber, Dutch Mandolin Chamber Orchestra

These were initially (and exclusively at that time) released as part of the Classical Mandolin Society of America's virtual conference this fall. It was good fun, a good and easily accessible event.

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

I missed this query back then, but didn't have the link anyhow. My daughter showed it to me, I noted, and mentally moved on.

    Re: Pavane In E Minor

I'm sorry. I'm struggling with this one. (1) I don't hear any mandolins, only guitar(s). (2) This arrangement! The harmony sounds simplified and the rhythm transformed from gently implied to...

Re: "The Mandolin Meets Vivaldi" in NE Ohio

I have to agree. I didn't know what to expect, but I admit that a resonator mandolin wasn't on my list of potential expectations. I'd rather the tone color of a more conventional mandolin played...

    Re: Polyetherimide plectra

Yes, the Galli are patterned after traditional Neapolitan plectra of the "golden era," and the Apollo—in turn—are as well. The Galli are celluloid. I quite like their tone, form, and function, but...

    Re: Polyetherimide plectra

I love'em. This traditional large-Neapolitan profile perfectly serves how I prefer to mandolin. I love the acoustic behavior of this material (as mentioned before, I used to trim, buff, and bevel...

"The Mandolin Meets Vivaldi" in NE Ohio

A friend of mine shared this by e-mail. I don't know John Reynolds, but am sincerely curious. I may try to listen in.

Arrived today: 0.8 mm and 1.00 mm in polyetherimide (Ultem). I'm eager to wrap up the day's day-job labors and give them a spin.

I played Roman Festivals without amp just over a year ago. I was surprised to discover that I was very clearly audible from the way-back seats (my wife recorded literally seconds of the performance...
  19. Re: Mahler Symphony Nos.7 and 8 and the mandolin

Bernstein certainly carries some Mahler-aficionado street cred, perhaps especially with NY (and perhaps excepting when heading Berlin at the end of his career). Thanks. I'll review vid.
  20. Re: Recordings on mandolin of Biber's Passacaglia

His choices for where to apply tremolo were interesting: sometimes effective, sometimes strained or awkward. Still, an interesting and valiant effort.
  21. Re: Recordings on mandolin of Biber's Passacaglia

I don't, but I printed a facsimile of the score just to remind myself that I'm an amateur musician at best.
  22. Mahler Symphony Nos.7 and 8 and the mandolin

So, friends, which recordings do you like? In which is the mandolin both most evident and played well (it's easy to lose a mandolin in a gigantic Mahlerian orchestra)? Other thoughts on these...

My daughter pointed this one out to me on eBay. It's intriguing, but it needs just a little more work than I'd feel up to investing in it.
