Re: Bass Builder Undertakes Mandola Build

You beat me to it. The patent shows as expired lifetime. At least he doesn't have to worry about Gibson knocking on his door.

    Re: Re-attaching an old label

I'd just buy a bottle of liquid hide glue. It's a label. You'll find other uses for it. I have a bridge I glued on an old L&H parlor guitar about 20 years ago and it's still holding. I would never...
  3. Re: 1929 Martin Style C Mandolin with side crack - Worth fixing?

The original hard cases (assuming it is a hard case) are difficult to find. Even in poor shape they can generally be repaired to make them serviceable. Cafe member LoudLoar (his name is Steve...

    Re: 1993 Mandolin Brothers Catalogue

Right after Stan died there was talk that Allison Jay might be working on a coffee table book that was all of the surviving Mandolin Bros catalogs. I certainly wish I would have kept mine and if that...

    Re: Just read "MANDOLIN PRICING"

That's debatable. They are a bit like bachelor farmers. Even though you think there is no way for their numbers to increase there are more and more of them each year, at least on eBay.

    Re: Different chord shapes

On any fretted stringed instruments the same chord can be created in different positions on the fretboard. There are times when the chord you are looking for just sounds better in a song than one...
  8. Re: 1920 Gibson A $500 today only needs repair

It's a weird link. Open it and then close it and open it again. That's the only way I can get it to open.
  9. Re: 1920 Gibson A $500 today only needs repair

Well, Ok but that means that every Stradivarius that exists is an absolutely beautiful violin from the Great Depression as well
  10. Re: 1920 Gibson A $500 today only needs repair

I'm afraid they don't know much about the great depression. It's pretty local to me and I'm not real interested but somebody might be.

    Re: Bowlback- Harmony? Supertone

Actually Mick we very much preferred the Gibson mandolins with the South Jersey Pickguard.
  12. Re: What up with the fretboard on this Gibson?

According to this site it was made in 2011 so we can all agree that there's no sense in checking your serial number on that site cause there's no way that's right. It looks rather mid-60's to me...

I think what you mean is that you aren't on any of the larger social media sites. You're here, you can't say that you don't use social media. This is social media.

    Re: Bowlback- Harmony? Supertone

We've actually seen more than we probably realized. Over the years a few different resources that show bowlback mandolins in production have popped up like this one. There were a few more....

    Re: Help identifying a mandolin

Extremely common. Before the dawn of imports it was extremely common for American builders like Harmony, Kay, and Regal to sell unbranded instrument for the trade. It's not unusual. Enjoy your...

    Re: Help identifying a mandolin

It looks like it started life as a nondescript imported flat top and backed mandolin made in somewhat the shape of an F style mandolin. Somebody has gone to some trouble to dress it up a bit. Most...
  18. Re: Weber Bridge - nut spinning, unable to raise/lower

My first question is do you need to raise or lower the strings at this time? If the answer is no change your strings and make your appointment with your luthier for the future. If you need to raise...
  19. Re: ID? F-style mandolin with Eagle front/back and wood trim

They have dropped some of the bling but I always said that if they ever figured out what the mandolins were supposed to really look like and eased out the pearl that they'd sell a whole lot of these.

    Re: IV F5 kit

The majority of the IV kits built here have been the A style and that is a Saga AM-10 mandolin kit. It is partially assembled. Ken's F style kits are something he sources independently and I only...
  21. Re: ID? F-style mandolin with Eagle front/back and wood trim

I agree with Charley. It was made in Vietnam and sold by one of two sellers on eBay. It was either Bruce Wei or Antonio Tsai. They still sell on eBay and their specialties are blinged up instruments...

Re: Sketchy Gibson F5-G on Reverb?

I don't think anyone doubts the authenticity of the mandolin in the picture and that's how the tailpiece on my F5G looked when I bought it in 2005. Mine was changed to the "The Gibson" cover it now...

    Re: Homemade Tuning Peg Tool

I have had a few Strad-O-Lins that required some work on the holes because they were slightly misaligned. I've also added the Stewmac vintage bushings on occasion because they look right.

    Re: Homemade Tuning Peg Tool

If you have hard to turn buttons there are different reasons why that could be but the first thing I would look at it Paul Hostetter's tuner maintenance page.
  25. Re: Shop disc sander for small delicate work

As long as you're working on small delicate things that should work out just fine. I'm trying to figure where I would even have room for that thing in my shop. :)
