  1. Re: Today in Mandolin History - August 5, 1890, Lawrence, KS Jour

Heh heh - In honor of this event I may just have to subject a certain someone to some trashy mandolin music for her birthday! :):mandosmiley:

    Re: Roland White death?

He left us a lot of great music. Glad I got to see him a couple of times at the Frankfort Bluegrass Festival.
I've also enjoyed many of the videos he and Diane made together. God bless them both.

Re: Going from scooped to unscooped fingerboard

I saw a Gibson 5G one time where the owner had a single fret removed from the extension in his preferred sweet spot. Apparently that gave him sufficient clearance to avoid the clicking.

Would've been nice to have a continued supply of those Z mandolins.

Hank, thanks for reporting back on what you ended up doing and how it worked out. Glad this is a success story!

I couldn't agree more - and to further quote Timbofood, "I love this place!"

To Scott and the gang: my gratitude, and a little something via paypal. :)

Re: Vintage photo of a Lyon & Healy mando cello

Some of those baseball bat necks are surprisingly comfortable to play. Seems counterintuitive, and I have small hands to boot. I'd certainly love the chance to find out how playable one of those L&H...

    Re: Howe-Orme Mandolinetto

Don't forget these auctions usually have a "buyers premium" (I think that's what it's called) - a percentage you have to pay above and beyond the bid price.

Also - from the photos it looked like...

Me too, Allen. They are fun as you said. I find you have to learn to play them like they want to be played - they are not bluegrass machines. Mine had the neck falling off, but was put back together...

For those of us who are notation challenged, Chapter 4 and Appendix B of the Dummies book are particularly useful.

    Re: harmonic dampener grommets

I actually just ordered some more of these, and I have a couple of comments:

The ones I received are a little gummy/sticky - you definitely want to keep these off of the finish on your mando.

I actually think this whole video great fun, but I'm linking directly to the part most (im)pertinent to the meanderings of this thread:
