How long do they last? My son liked the Elixir with Nanoweb coating until they tripled in price. Now he plays with D'Addario XT which also last better than most strings. He also has an Eastman.
Thanks so much to everyone for all your thoughtful and helpful replies. Good advice! My son is waiting for the right instrument to be placed in his hands and I trust him to know it when he finds it....
To Clark Beavans: Good advice - thanks.
Thanks - we haven't checked out Ron's Pickin' Parlor but we know Lowe Vintage very well (good jams there!). Not sure if my son knows about Mandomutt; I'll pass the info on. Thanks again!
His Gibson is an A but he prefers his F5. We are in NC. He is waiting for IBMA as there are a lot of vendors there and he thinks that will be his best bet. I thought I'd see if there was any better...
Yeah, I missed that too - also, that it was five years old. I need to scrutinize more carefully!
It's really hard to know how much Collings' instruments are worth. There are no prices on their website (just "Find a Dealer"). Here are two ads for the MF, at vastly different prices. The only...
Thanks for the comments. Collings is one that my son was lusting after at last year's IBMA but he didn't have the money. Perhaps it will be there again this year.
My son has a basic Eastman mandolin and plays in a couple of bands (one is a college band). He also has a 1940s Gibson that needs new frets (it was the first mando he played a lot) but he has worked...
The Eastman is not available for 6 months and the Luna not until the end of January. We're looking at mandolins on craigslist and ebay in the $500 range. Any recommendations? There is a Washburn near...
Thanks Mike; that thread is really helpful. There's a possibility that we can get a new Eastman at trade price from the music shop where he works part-time; any recommendations on Eastmans?
Thanks for the replies; we had been looking at Loar mandolins. I think Luna is solid wood though: Body: Solid Maple
Top: Solid Spruce
Chrome/Black Hardware
Fretboard: Rosewood
MOP Moon Phase...
My son has a 1940s Gibson mandolin (which he loves) but is looking for a second mandolin, mainly to keep in a different tuning but also possibly for performances on stage. He has been looking at the...
What is the difference between the 150 and the 140? I found a 140 local to me on Craigslist that I could hold and play before I buy, but is it worth paying the extra for the 150 anyway?...
I found one on ebay - do you think it's ok buying from there rather than somewhere like Elderly?...
Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check out the Kentucky. I know I'm asking a lot to get a good instrument for around a couple of hundred. I'll probably stretch to a bit more. Thanks again!
It's my daughter's 40th birthday in April (aargh!) and I'd like to give her a mandolin. She's a good musician (plays violin, piano, flute) but has never played mandolin. Do any of you have...
Thanks again for all your help. It is a nice instrument but I guess I messed up buying it at an estate sale without my son being there. I assumed that any Gibson would be worth 500 bucks and so I...
Hey guys, Thanks so much for all your help and advice. I think it's a genuine mandolin but a bit feminine with the modifications, as pointed out. My son is very happy with his plain but decent 40s...
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this group but have already enjoyed and learned from some of the posts here. I play various musical instruments, but not the mandolin. My son is a gifted player though, and...
