  1. Re: How to touch up chips in SOL painted binding

Since I was out and about, I looked at the little bottles of model paint at Hobby Lobby and the sharpies at HL and the adjacent Staples. The color selection was pathetic. The space in the display for...
  2. Re: How to touch up chips in SOL painted binding

I'm leaning toward leaving it alone.

That said, I was at Hobby Lobby today on a mission to get supplies for another project, and I saw Minwax Wood Finish Stain Marker in ebony, looks pretty dang...

    Re: Tab vs. Dots

Wait, you're having AI write your forum posts? :disbelief:

Couldn't that be construed as taking a turn toward the dark side? :whistling:
  4. Re: How to touch up chips in SOL painted binding

I'm pretty good with a paint brush, but the color is not exactly black. There's a tiny bit of brown to it.
I feel like Jake is a subscriber to "leave it alone and weep ...." school of thought....
  5. How to touch up chips in SOL painted binding

I thumped my main mandolin against a desk this morning and chipped the painted on binding. While I'm grateful that it didn't cause a bigger problem, like a side seam issue, I'm wondering if there is...
  6. Re: Identifying Flatiron Festival Build Location/ Avoiding Import

That mandolin has been on craigslist for a pretty long time. I'd be haggling.
I looked at another instrument the same guy had, and although I didn't end up buying it, he was willing to negotiate.

Re: To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade?

Two columns. The spacing might be tricky.
  8. Re: Dabbler newbie sight unseen O hole conundrum, advice?

There's also a basically brand new Gold Tone like the one under discussion for under $450. It looks pretty nice.

    Re: RIP Dickey Betts

The Allmans were one of my favorite bands when I was young. So sad the see the old guard slowly but surely passing away. 80 doesn't seem so old to me any more. RIP Dickey.

    Re: Tab vs. Dots

In my public school band, which I participated in from 3rd to 12th grade, we never did any sight singing.

Ear training is on my radar screen of skills to work on.

For me, I very much aspire to...

    Re: Tab vs. Dots

I think never having learned to read music gives you an advantage in learning by ear.

    Re: Tab vs. Dots

I learned to read standard notation as a kid. I also like it when the music has both, as I'm not yet there with my fretboard mastery, especially up the neck. I'd really like to get to where I can...

    Re: ArtistWorks for Old Folks

A major upside of Artistworks is certainly the personal feedback via video exchange. The downside is the delay (even longer now as attested by DaveGinNJ).

I subscribed to Artistworks for a year...

    Re: ArtistWorks for Old Folks

To paraphrase, Matt F said something like you think about it until you don't need to anymore (its internalized). To me that sounds more productive than to have never, or only minimally, thought about...

    Re: ArtistWorks for Old Folks

I'm kind of old, too, but am not yet an intermediate player.

I figure that unless you've got a heckava ear and an outstanding talent for pattern recognition, if you want to learn to improvise, or...

    Re: Postal Mandolin

I kind of like the scroll. It looks like something from "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (reversed).

    Re: Mandolin Gender

My oval hole SOL is female, the f-hole SOL is male. But then again, my F2 is also male (a pirate, I was told recently). ;)

I feel like the instrument itself will let you know
  19. Re: Tuner button replacement for 1925 Gibson A Snakehead

These have been up for awhile. I saw them months ago when looking for tuners for a SOL. If you think about going for them, I'd suggest you might be able to do better than the asking price.

    (btw -...
  20. Re: AI and music: Billie Eilish, Sheryl Crow and Jon Bon Jovi

Automated stations. No human disk jockies or human curated selections anymore either. If AI doesn't make the selections now, it will soon. So all the songs will likely be the overplayed ones that...

    Re: Upgrading or authenticity

I think it would be great fun to play a mandolinetto on stage. Probably, though, you'd have alot of people thinking its a ukulele.

    Re: Mandolin Cafe Milestones

Wow, 2,000 posts in 4 years. That's quite alot. What do the kids call it now - a yapper - (and that's not supposed to have any negative connotation, they say).

I will say this, I feel like I'm...

    Re: Mandolin Book for Beginners

I'm a fairly new player (4 years - wow they went fast) with a stack of books to rival Dan's, and I agree with DCHammers and Phaedrus157 - take a class. Hindsight is 20/20.

    Don Julin's book is a...

Re: Gibson Custom F-5G auction on eBay

I am curious as to why one would want to obscure the serial number in advertising.
  25. Re: Percival Everett - man of impeccable taste

Sounds like a great guy. Now I'm going to have to go read some of his books.
