Long time guitarist. Picked up mando at 58.
Love it. In fact, now my main player.
Dived in with fiddle tunes, now messing with choro.
I wish I'd started earlier TBH but mandolin just wasn't ever...
I agree with the last post.
Projection and other people hearing YOU is different entirely to you hearing yourself.
Hence monitors on stage and the reflected delayed sound bouncing back doing...
Whilst your sentiment regards 10K $ maybe true, I can't see how that number would exclude you, or anyone
from investigating a plethora of instruments from good stables.
I mean, I own 2 mando's, a...
Just had this a few weeks now. Steady enough and comprehensive online audio that don't sound like an sampled ice cream van.
I have jumped around in it more than in front to back order. There are FAR...
XT or XS 11-40 on my mandos. My D guitars run XT 13-56 and they sound great, last ages.
I'd have to second that. I have one of each make and to be fair, they play great. The Eastman came setup great, the Kentucky not so but I did some DIY adjustment and now
that mando too, plays great....
I would second XS or even XT's.
I have used both. Love em.
I got an eastman 505. long time guitar player.
18 months later, zero regrets and around a hundred fiddle tunes of varying heritage later...
Was a weird at first transition. Now have x2 mandos, a...
Not sure that's true. Of course, you can play anything on 'any mandolin' but classical is usually played on 'Neopolitan' bowl back styles or with open holes.
I have an F style and an A style. I much...
I use thumb and 2 fingers (alot). IME, that doesn't mean the pick angle is perpendicular and horizontal to the strings.
I think it helps actually to be able to change easily the strength of attack....
coming from guitar to mando, i just use the pinky. Once i assimilated the 2 frets per finger thing I never had a problem.
Mine are still at war. I am much faster on the learning curve with mando though.
Everything just makes sense and of course, still in the honeymoon period though so who knows.
I think this quality of clarity and tone is true on other instruments too. I have tinkered with uke for years and have a few tenors. My best one starts to choke the higher you go but, it's better...
I am surprised no one has mentioned the d'addario XT. I use these on mando and some guitars. Excellent life and tone. Maybe not feeling as coated as elixirs but last fine.
I use 11 - 40.
Perhaps I need more time. I haven't struggled with electric, vs, acoustic, vs ukulele vs bass guitar before but mandolin IS tripping me up. Well actually, being honest, it's the other way around. I...
For me, I am using a small triangle primetone 1.5mm on all instruments now, including my electrics. I use varying string gauges across these instruments but have no issue adapting it seems.
I'm just going to stick with it and hopefully find a balance. I never expected the switching would affect me so much.
Hi.
I nearly bumped a year old thread before posting but, refrained as I know some don't like that way of doing things.
Thread here was interesting...
Clueless as to mandolin setup so many thanks for the free ebook. I'll compare things with my recent MD505 purchase and check stuff out. Pretty comfortable with guitar stuff but mando, nope.
