Re: Jethro Burns Warmup Thing Question

Really appreciate you guys sharing your Jethro Burns. Many Thanks.

I’ve written the exercise in what I’m hoping is G minor -still not 100% on the chords but they sound scary enough!

Re: Jethro Burns Warmup Thing Question

    Thanks for the reminder, Bren.
1970’s. Yes, and sometimes the article talked about a jig and you really wanted a reel, so it was a 2 month wait!
And no .abc players to give you a clear idea of...

Re: listing of rock songs w/mando

Lots of high end and really interesting textures.
Wondering if it was grandad who used to play the bass. And then the ironically played mandolin as if only old people are allowed to play mandolins....

Re: Jethro Burns Warmup Thing Question

    Misplaced repeats?
-You play the whole thing through to the double bar line. That’s 8 measures.
Start at beginning again, now the whole thing through but replace the 8th measure with the ninth...

Re: Recommend me some Irish folk bands

I think someone recently said never walk all over the singer with a mandolin, a bouzouki, octave, whistle…
These guys do it all the time!

Re: A different version of Red Haired Boy

    Thanks, interesting and nice playing.

    Here’s a version I recorded a while back.
I was in a phase where every tune I learned had to be in harmonic minor (as well). Some of the tunes sounded...

    Re: Southern Italian Mandolin

Here's a set of lyrics from La Procidana, a song that can sound very beautiful and romantic to a non-Italian speaker.
Indeed, there are vast variations in the lyrics in terms of dialect… but also...

Nice one Roland! I’m actually starting to understand the Blues. Many thanks.
  15. Re: Recommendation for mandolin lessons in USA

Good luck, lots of great places to go to. :)

Re: Italian folk music on mando

Thanks Mick, some nice links there.

Here are a couple of playlists for La Ciapa Rusa, referenced in the above .abc file. (Thanks Brian).
I use the .abc to get an idea of how the tunes feel on the...
  17. Re: Anyone tried this mandolin-friendly guitar tuning?

One cure for jangly courses is to replace the high octaves with slightly heavier strings -if the neck can handle the slightly increased tension.
Lighter strings are great for bending but tone and...

    Re: How to “woodshed”

My great grandmother used to say to us: ‘You carry on like that and you’ll be spending the night in the garden shed’.
Or: ‘you’ll be out there with the banshees’. And other such words in Gaelic...
  19. Re: Anyone tried this mandolin-friendly guitar tuning?

I had my ‘70s Sigma 12 string tuned like that using an electric bass string to get the right tension/tone. Had to get a medium and light set of guitar strings too but it was definitely worth it....
