My first mandolin was a Silvestri an that had [has - it’s been hanging on the wall for years] a stamp on the front which says “Silvestri, Catania”.
I should say that it is far more ornate than...
My thinking entirely!
Thanks, the Thoman link explains what I thought was the case (goods up to £135) but that’s not where I read it!
I don’t mind paying the taxes - you either pay them at source or prior to delivery -...
Definitely European. Seems to have a carved top so I’m not particularly bothered about the strange light. It’s not a mandolin though - ths scale length is somewhere just short of 20 inches.
If they’d put a white pickguard on it and printed it in negative, it might almost match the description!
.... apart from the fact that they say they come in in sheraton brown and the one illustrated is “natural”.
Can’t remember exactly where I read it but I believe that our wonderful government is expecting foreign firms to register for, collect and pay over UK VAT on “low value” transactions. I seem to...
I was also thinking of my 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th !!
I’ve never bothered.
Import duty and VAT is becoming something of an urban myth in the UK. Don’t forget that you’re also liable to pay VAT on the shipping costs.

After 40 years of changing strings, I’d got the “old” method pretty much licked but I’ve since gone over to the “wind and poke” method and it’s much easier.
That said, I still hate the Collings...
And this one.
So will this one!
This thread will soon be blocked - put it in the classifieds.
I’m just wondering what the paint-job might be hiding.
There’s a fair bit of chatter about it on genealogy research boards and the general consensus seems to be that it’s OK for people who’re long dead but not very believable if you remember the person...
The price you pay will pale into insignificance when you get 10 or maybe 20 years down the line by which time you’re likely to have bought a couple more. I spent a fortune on a Martin guitar back in...
I use the Acoustic Image “Coda” in the same way. It’s a bit clean for electric instruments so I’ve recently added a Strymon “Iridium” pedal which simulates a whole range of classic amps and cabinets.
Mine has a cutaway - the rounded type. It has a 12 fret neck so I do play up at that end fairly frequently. If you do decide you’d like one, it’s a bit late once it’s built. Also think about strings...
Perhaps it’s down to my slack language - I don’t make a habit of importing things - on their [severely lacking] receipt it’s referred to as a “brokerage charge”.
They can effectivelly charge you...
Thoman is efficient enough since brexit; they’ve reduced their prices so they now export everything tax free, which means that they leave all the tax collecting to their shipping company - in my case...
Go for it - you can’t go that far wrong if you know which way it needs to go and you don’t want to have to go running to a luthier every time you need a slight adjustment. Just make sure you...
Good question. I suspect that the majority of guitar fakes are likely to be “bolt together” electric guitars. Unless it’s simply a matter of sticking a posher logo on the headstock, high end acoustic...
They’re likely to be uncomfortable if you’re in the habit of playing topless but at least they should stop the back of your mandolin from sticking to your chest!
Where does the term “tenor” come from then?
