One more vote for this band. I was at the Berkeley concert and could and would have written exactly what Paul said, but he beat me too it. By the the way Paul is a great player himself.

JJM makes a lot of good suggestions.
It's of course to learn the instrumentals, but I strongly believe that to get the essence of the Monroe style you should learn his breaks to songs. Tha's...

[QUOTE=Mark Levesque;609223]Andy Statman, Charley Rappaport and Jeff Warschauer list the Moldavian
born mandolinist Martin Kalisky as an innovative influence. Does anyone have a recording of Martin...
It's Gerry by the way.
That's some nice playing. A great tune. That's also a wonderful sounding, (even over my small computer speakers) F-4. What year is it. I either play My 2003 GibsonF-5 Fern or...

Regarding popular tunes. A must for weddings is Mazeltov, a tune that comes right after the groom breaks the wine glass at the end of the ceremony. It is a song as well as a tune and I may not have...

That's Tony Philips the founder and leader speaking. I'm the guy ,mostly hidden, to the right of the conductor, trying to play the mandocello.
What makes it "wrong"? I just know it sounds great!

Sing each note long enough to clearly hear how each note sounds against the chord. [QUOTE]
Great idea. Thank you. I never thought of this or had anybody suggest it, in all my years of playing....
Bill Cheatam
9 8 10 10 is another nice one without the root. Bass or guitar should cover it. Another good thing about this position is that is also be a Em7b5 (root in bass), or, Gm6 (m6 in bass).

From Frank Wakefield.... Use the side of your pick not the point.
From Andy Statmen .... Think James Brown rhythm section.
I'd have to say that this post for all intents and purposes could have been written by me. I'm not sure that that solo was #the particular one, but it remains to my ears one of the best, and the...
