    Default Waiting for new(old) mandolins

I found a pocket/pochette mandolin and of course there was mandolinetto in the same weeks.
I won both auctions and am now anxiously waiting for the post.

That's what I thought(originally) but it came at a price, so I'm undecided.

There was one of those manolinettos for sale at a very reasonable BIN in the UK- it looked to be in good order too. Here is one that has been restored- he sleuthed out the maker in Saxony:

Let's hope they live up to your expectations!

Don't expect mandolin-level tone or volume out of the "pocket" mandolin. I have one (a gift, luckily) of German make, "Holdrio Picolo," (yeah, spelled that way), and it's really muted sounding. Can't read the label on yours, but it could well be German-made as well.

On the other hand, my Howe-Orme mandolinetto, bought as a "wall hanger" for a song on eBay and later restored, has a nice little treble-y voice.

"Holdrio" is the way Germans spell the sound of yodeling ;-) A yodel mandolin?? :-)

I don't expect much of the sound. Originally I wanted it for practice in the car but I've started to warm to that silly little instrument.

Jake Wildwood had a French made one from the 60s recently that I got serious about just moments too late. The sound clip sounded great, and he compared it with a better sounding Strad-O-Lin. I knew about it real early on, too. Dang!

I just scored on a very old Pocket Mandolin! I was just in Erie PA killing time while Dad was in Chemo, I hit an Antique store and found one, nice tuners, well made, clamshell tailpiece assembly, also it came with an original rectangular case! I got a squealing deal! They wanted 100 bucks, I got it for 80! It has a small top crack but hey no biggie here!

What a great find! I fantasize about finding instruments in antique/second hand shops.

Antique stores, flea markets, junk shops, Goodwill. Keep looking. They will find you. May not be the best bargain but you never know until you try.

The little new one arrived today

It needs cleaning, some small cracks repaired, new endpiece, new bridge, some tuners are very tight and maybe some filling of the deep pickgrooves.

I wonder if I could use a violincase for it.
