Default Newbie from Texas says Howdy

Howdy Everyone, Just joined and wanted to introduce myself. Been playing guitar for about 35 years, classic country mixed with alittle Bluegrass. Been wanting to try my hand at Mandolin, so here I am. Figured I would educate myself by reading all the great wisdom being shared here before I run out and buy one and get started. Really looking forward to picking your brains soon on good starter mandolins and lessons.
    Have a great evening
    Bill

Guess I missed the Victoria before. If you settle near Nacogdoches, I highly recommend Jon Hall for lessons, maybe even starting now with Zoom.

Welcome to the Café! First mandolins can cover a lot of ground. I wrote this 10 years ago and it still applies. Maybe use D'Addario EJ-74s (rebranded) and make it $10 on picks. As a guitar player, this is not news to you. Set up set up set up.

Thanks for the welcomes and great information. Chris and Jamie !

Have spent alot of time just reading thru all the great information here. I think I am just about ready to start the quest of finding the right mandolin. Think I will go used at first, and upgrade later if needed. Will post what brand/type I'm looking at and get your feedback.

    Have a great evening

Hey Bill! Welcome to the cafe! I'm also a South Texan transplanted to the piney woods from Corpus Christ in 1973. We have thriving acoustic music community in the Nacogdoches area although we're struggling like everyone else during the pandemic. Thank you Sherry for the kind word.

I've only been once, but Nacadoches seems like a cool little town. I made a point to stop by the Old Time String Shop when I was there and had a great chat with the proprietor, although I've spaced the name.

Steve Hartz is the name you forgot. He's a fine mandolin player with a lot of other talents as well.

Sounds like I need to take a drive up to your neck of the woods and look around.

Hello from HEB! - about ten minutes from DFW airport. Not really mandolin country around here but it's home.
