Default Where are the used Bighorn's?

As a result of one of the Cafe's giveaways (Design a Weber), I developed a slight case of MAS for the Weber Bighorn 2 point oval.

Seems to me there aren't many in circulation - or the folks who bought them like them so much they don't want to part with them.

Of course my current more pressing need is replacing the windows in my house - about 2.5 K more than what my desired next mando would balllpark, so even if one were to magically appear in the classifieds...

    Heavy sigh.

    Wishful thinking over.

Hey Mug, as the Belafonte song says

And we don't need a window, on such a sunny day!"

    Thanks for that Paul.

    Ski,

Good luck on your house repair and good hunting for the Weber Bighorn. I was fortunate to be able to get a Bighorn Plus about a year ago. In my view they are terrific instruments. BTW, I was also fortunate to see Sierra Hull and Highway 111 in Nacogdoches, Texas on October 18th. She and the group were outstanding!

    Regards.

I picked up a used one a few years ago from the mandolin store and before they moved I visited the weber factory and while I was there Bruce Weber totally went through it and put on new strings and charged me $20.00. I'm real sorry they moved. I looked for a while to find a used one but don't be in a rush and you'll get one. Good luck.

I got the most interesting indirect compliment last week. I was at a friends house for a jam. I had pulled my Bighorn out and was warming up playing single notes. As he walked back to the room he was saying "I don't think that is in tune. Oh! I thought you were playing the piano."

I just don't think people who have a Bighorn really want give them up. I know I don't. I assume I'll have other mandolins in the future but I can't imagine giving it up.

I can answer this question as an official owner, they're creamy smooth play-ability and tone which is even across the board with a little more bass response than dryness makes a wonderful mando. The fit and finish are great and it's a looker. Since I own this one but play my Breed Love mostly I showed up at a regular jam with it, from time to time, and unannounced. Without fail, the regulars would hear me tuning and warming up and turn around asking if I had gotten a new mando before setting eyes on it.

That's a really good indication when more than one person does that every time it makes an appearance. Sincer you asked, I've been thinking about selling it for another. I'd like to try out a dry, traditional chopper. The Big Horn has a great chop but it's just a bit off from the dry models. Not bad but different. Then again, I just received a new job offer with a good salary so I may just hold on to it.

Update, in case anyone cares: I bought the Weber Bighorn. Lovely sound. At last I have a mandolin I enjoy playing! All of your comments were right on. Thanks for the encouragement.

Prompted by a PM from Belbein asking about the Bighorn that was at Mandolin Brothers and now lives here in the Kingdom ….

Weber Bighorns are just phenomenal. I can appreciate that some my not consider them a Bluegrasser's dream. I don't play BG much and the Bighorn has been wonderful at anything either Lynne or i have wanted to play on it.

As the OP asked: "Why are there so few available?" Answer: Why would anyone want to sell one? Especially if you've taken the time to custom order one. (When the one from Mandolin Brothers got here and i opened the case and examined it …… it occurred to me that it was exactly the instrument i would have custom ordered.)

Congrats on the new mando. My BH has F holes not oval. I think it'd get along great in any situation although the oval is traditionally better suited for OT and Irish. Happy Picking!

I've owned a Bighorn ff hole model for 5 years now...I doubt I will ever sell it. Bottom line, they don't make too many of them and people tend to keep them (they are that good).

Damn. I should'a thought to "private message" you. I was just in Youston and Wimberly for a week! Would'a been a kick to meet a garrulous old coot like you. Particularly now that I know you have good taste in mandolins. Maybe next time.

Howdy friends, an update to an old thread - I finally found my "unicorn". She was hiding out at Acoustic Vibes Music in Tempe, AZ. I've got a tracking # and another day of waiting (due Friday). The folks there have been very responsive to my queries and swift to ship.

Just on looks, I think two pointers are beautiful mandolins. And asymmetrical two pointers are the most beautiful. I would have a hard time explaining why. They just strike me that way.
