Default Rock, Folk-Rock, Roots, etc. Jam Tunes

I did an advanced search and came up with lots of discussions on Bluegrass or Old Time "must know" jam tunes. I'm asking about good selections for song-circle jams that focus on the rock, folk rock, country rock etc. genre that most people in my age group would be familiar with. I'm mostly into Gypsy Jazz, Hawaiian Slack Key and Americana/Alt Country these days; stuff that never gets radio air play. Basically I'm out of touch with much of the music I grew up with, so when I pull out a tune by Stochelo Rosenberg, Moses Kahumoku or Slaid Cleaves at a jam I get a bunch of blank stares.

I'm looking for fairly simple, acoustically playable songs that old guys like me would be familiar with in a circle jam. Here's what I came up with so far:

The Joker (Steve Miller), Pancho and Lefty (TVZ), Dead Flowers (Stones), The Weight (The Band), Lodi (CCR), Who'll Stop the Rain (CCR), Werewolves of London/Sweet Home Alabama/Take the Money and Run (Warren Zevon/Skynyrd/Steve Miller), Me and Bobby McGee (Kris Kristofferson), Slip Sliding Away (Paul Simon), etc.

    Looking for more suggestions. Thanks!

You Ain't Going Nowhere (The Byrds), Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd). A couple more easy and fun ones would be Rag Mamma Rag and Up On Cripple Creek (The Band). Hey Hey What Can I do? (Zeppelin) I'll try to get Mr. Goist over ehre to leave some. His band plays a lot of this genre.

Crazy Mama (J.J. Cale), Going up the country (Canned Heat) , Behind Blue Eyes (Who), Drive my car (Beatles)
    I think, therefore, I pick.

Willin', Dixie Chicken and Sailin' Shoes, all from Little Feat. Check out Sam Bush's take on Sailin' Shoes on youtube. Neil Young songs are good. Once you start jammin' on Down By the River it's hard to stop!

Sounds like my Saturday jam. We do lots of Dylan/Band. The host is a John Prine freak so we do a lot of that stuff. Merle Haggard, George Jones, Johnny Cash, a little Gary Stewart. Hickory Wind is a big favorite. Also "Four Until Late," Robt. Johnson.

I like to bring in "different" stuff. Last week it was "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right" (Eddie Hinton). Also "Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever" (Four Tops). And off the wall stuff like "Who Shot the La La" (Oliver Morgan), "A Thing You Gotta Face" by Polka Dot Slim. Tomorrow I'm gonna try "When I'm Gone" (Phil Ochs).

So we're all over the place. A lotta fun! We're all displaced refugees from the local bluegrass jam, which insisted on playing nothing but . . . bluegrass.

The Neil Young song 'Pocahontas' goes well... we were inspired to try it by the Gillian Welch version of that song.

'Car wheels on a gravel road' by Lucinda Williams has mandolin potential as well.

Sounds great with mandolin. There's also Acadian Driftwood (The Band), or Long Black Veil (which I think is traditional).

I like Neil Young and Grateful Dead songs. Also I will second on Dead Flowers (Stones) and Wish You Were Here. Let It Bleed (Stones) and Margaritaville (Buffet) are also fun. Mary Janes Last Dance (Petty) is another I just learned.

Atlantic City by Levon Helm is a fun one. It also has one of the best opening lines,"They blew up the chicken man in Philly last night. And they blew up his house too." Gotta love it.

Most of the Jimmy Buffet stuff goes well for me. Some Eagles tunes (Take it easy, Lyin' eyes, etc.), CCR stuff, too.

Getting a little up-to-date with some Kid Rock, Zac Brown and Uncle Kracker tunes that daughter-in-law has dropped on me.

There's a lot out there other than b-grass.

Current Stable: Two Tenor Guitars (Martin 515, Blueridge BR-40T), a Tenor Banjo (Deering GoodTime 17-Fret), a Mandolin (Burgess #7). two Banjo-Ukes and five Ukuleles..

The inventory is always in some flux, but that's part of the fun.

My band is not rock. We do something you mighty call "gothic Americana" with lots of old time tragedy and murder songs, (think Knoxville Girl) and tunes that fit the feeling, (Sally in the Garden played slowly), and old down and out blues. We do CCR's Bad Moon Rising, which seamlessly fits the context. Its a good one.

Hmm, no not yet, but I am sitting in with some guys later today. Do you try and cop the sitar sound (searches memory...was there a sitar...)? Great tune, I will call it at the session and see what happens.

I'm glad to know there are others who like this oldies stuff. Our trio uses bluegrass as an excuse to get together and then ends up playing all this other stuff. We could go on for years just on Credence and Eagles material alone.
