    Default Poe Mandolin Build

After obtaining a mandoquin from Andy Poe, which he kindly made an additional mandola bridge and nut for, I commissioned a Scout. I was so blown away by the tone and volume of the mandoquin/mandola, I wondered what one of his mandolins would be like. When Andy agreed to build it with a 1 5/16" nut width and slightly longer scale (to accommodate my huge mits) I couldn't say no. Here is the Scout in the white:

    Congratulations!

There was a Scout sitting in the classifieds for a while that drove me nuts. I would love to try one of Andy's Scouts one day, and from the sound clips I've heard, it would be very hard to resist.

What kind of finish are you going to have done to it? Andy does amber so nicely ...

Looking forward to seeing it again soon

I'm looking forward too! The finish will be dark amber, with relic brass tailpiece and tuners, tortoise/white/tortoise binding, K&K pickup. My mandoquin/mandola is amberburst and I would say it's as or more beautiful than the Collings tangerineburst I used to own.

It was probably five or six months ago that I commissioned this mandolin from Andy, and I had just bought another instrument from him. Andy's a great guy to work with and his instruments....well, I personally haven't seen or heard better. (That's a free plug for the mandoquin/mandola currently in the classifieds!).

I'm a bit speechless in anticipation of receiving this in the coming week.

Very sharp! The waiting has to be nerve-wracking.

Current Stable: Two Tenor Guitars (Martin 515, Blueridge BR-40T), a Tenor Banjo (Deering GoodTime 17-Fret), a Mandolin (Burgess #7). two Banjo-Ukes and five Ukuleles..

The inventory is always in some flux, but that's part of the fun.

That's a knock-out! The back is killer and I really like the stylish headstock with new "Poe" script. Looking forward to your next posts.

Arrived today and I've got about an hour playing time into it. The wide nut (1 5/16") and chunkier neck are exactly what I had hoped for; Andy nailed it on the feel of the neck and fingerboard. Sound-wise, this mandolin is remarkably loud for a brand new flat top, and very well-balanced across the strings. I will try to get a sound clip for those interested. Meanwhile,

P.S. Now someone need to buy my Poe Mandoquin/Mandola so I can pay my taxes!

Here's a quick noodlin sound clip - a few open strings, a couple licks, a wee bit of chop (I don't profess to play anything close to BG mind you), a few more licks, and one time through an old Irish reel...
