I told myself that getting a mandocello would satisfy me for a while. Little did I know it just showed me how much I needed an upgrade from my entry level Kentucky. Started to look for what the "ideal" mandolin was in a price range I could afford. Wanted F style because awesome looking, wanted oval hole since I've been leaning more folky than bluegrassy and they sound sweet and different, wanted electronics for the times I play in church or similar. In short, everything pointed towards grabbing an Eastman 614. I was satisfied since I figured those don't come up too frequently used at good prices, especially since I decided their great red finish looks better than sunburst.

Little did I know one would show up less than a week after I decided this for a great price and fitting everything I wanted. When the universe decides to throw an answer so clearly at you, how can you say no? Cannot wait for it.

Sometimes the best part of the new mandolin acquisition is the anticipation. In this case you did well.

That's a great price for a F5G, even with heavy play wear. If I'm not in heavy downsize mode, I'll be tempted to take that for a spin.

Yeh the classifieds can be evil. I popped on that 1937 Cromwell G-6 short neck F-7 looking thing "I got a soft spot for them old depression era Gibsons" and well there was less than 10 of those G6's made so its a rare bird. and it comes with a case that looks as though it was made in the 40's so thats an added bonus since I like the old cases that are obscure!
Thats going to be it for me for a while since the wife said I can go after a real Loar or unsigned Loar or early fern. So yes I love her way too much or she loves me more!

Have you noticed the amount of killer mandos that seems to enter the ranks of the classifieds these days? Seems like it's been on an upward curve since about this time last year consistently. There are just some rockin' mandos out there!...whoosh!

There seem to be quite a few Givens A's for sale right now. I've played quite a few, and I have to say, you really need to play them first, as I've never found them to be consistent.

I played the one at TME, but can't say I preferred it over anything else I played that day. The real stunner was the Girouard F they have.

This is an octave mandolin. Hand-built, beautifully carved and finished. Warm, unique, gorgeous timbre.

It was crafted and signed in Logan, Montana by Bruce Weber; coincidentally in the exact same month and year that I graduated high school - just a couple hundred miles away in the Bitterroot valley of western Montana. I was born and literally grew up on the Bitterroot Mountains. Its home. Fitting that this is a "Bitterroot" model Weber... too fitting. It even has a "D" shaped sound-hole! (My name is Dave)

I always knew I wanted to get an Octave at some point. Couldn't pass this one up. Just arrived via Fedex. Going to be a very fun weekend.

This Fern offered by TME has got to be one of the nicest I've seen. Sounds fantastic too.
At less than half the price of a decent L.L. F5, the only thing keeping me from hitting the 'Buy it Now' button is the certainty that my wife wouldn't allow me to live long enough to play it.

At that asking price -- given that a new one is $9K at Carter's and a pair of 2003's in the classifieds are $5750 and $6500 -- I can understand why. Still, I'm disoriented by finding this caliber of mandolin for sale in my neighborhood. Usually, in order to play such an instrument I have to buy it from a distance.

I dont get why someone would list nice high dollar mandolins on eBay. Dont they know all the in the market mandoholics check the Cafe classifieds 40 times a day ?

You should buy it! Seriously though...a quick google shows 9 out of 10 used Bridgers were listed for sale at $1999

There are at least 4 Lloyd Loar signed mandolins in the classifieds right now. I know there has been LOTS of discussion about the market or lack there of for them right now. But one just showed up in the classifieds for $125K. Also lots of early to late 20's A's, F2 and F4's as well.

On a different not there have been lots of threads looking for reasonable price US made F5 style mandolins, and Old Wave just showed up for $1500 might be a good option.

And anybody looking for a really good F5 mandolin for a good price should check out the Kentucky KM-1050. I owned one and played a couple others and all were very good mandolins. Can't believe it has not sold as they do not come up for sale very often.
