Dramatization of the incident, from the 1976 Leadbelly movie:
Irrelevant note: Michael Cooney wrote that he was approached to dub in the 12-string guitar for this movie (he's got the Leadbelly style to perfection). Cooney would record the guitar tracks, another African-American musician would play "Leadbelly's hands" in the close-ups, and Roger Mosely, who played Leadbelly in the movie, would pantomime playing guitar as best he could. Cooney declined the offer, but they obviously got someone to mimic Leadbelly's 12-string licks, as well as the "hands closeup" musician.
Now, something serious for the OP: does your "neighbor" know your probation status, and what the risk is for you if he/she brings "something illegal" into your house? Lots of humor in this thread, but the consequences of a thoughtless act like this could be pretty serious. As an ex-police department employee, had some experience of how a momentary lapse in judgment, can result in permanent damage.
You dodged a bullet this time, but chances of dodging every bullet in a fusillade, well, ain't that good. Little heart-to-heart with that neighbor, would be my advice. IMHO, discretion is by far the better part of valor, and not too many immediate pleasures, are worth giving up your freedom, even if it's only for a short time.
