Thread: thank you mandolin, for keeping me out of jail!

  1. #1

Default thank you mandolin, for keeping me out of jail!

My probation officer came by and a neighbor left something illegal at my house. Was going to be arrested but I showed off my mandolin. My probation officer thought it would be a shame to send me to jail and interrupt my mandolin practice. she did give me a pretty good barking at, though

Keep practicing that mandolin. Maybe your neighbor needs a mandolin, too.

At least you don't play banjo. You'd be doing double-time.

I don't know where you live but they must have pretty tough jails if they won't even let you play your mandolin in your cell. Maybe they think you'll hang yourself with an E string?

Good thing she didn't hear you play, you'd be in jail for indecent intonation!

Well my neighbor came a knockin, with my mando I was a rockin, she asked me if needed a change.. She offered up a trio, along with some Cheeto's , with me, her and her good friend Mary Jane. She slipped off her G String, I broke my E string, that morning it sure was insane. But now I sit here in my cell, wishin like hell, I was just, doin 4/4 time. (PM me for an address to send the royalties check to)

kev that has to be the most provocative thread title ever. I am glad things worked out.

The hidden benefits of a mandolin. Wondrous.

One thanksgiving weekend I was stopped at a DWI checkpoint at 3am. Only car on the car with 6+ police cars. When asked where I was coming from I said "playing mandolin at a restaurant... I bet you never heard that one before." he laughed and after a few more questions I was home.

Music calms the savage beast. Don't just learn from your good move, learn from the mistake -- whatever that may have been -- that set her off in the first place. An ounce of prevention is worth a trip to the pokey.

The prevention of an ounce might be the cure for time in the pound!

Glad to hear you for off with just a good talking to, and keep up that practicing.

You should look up what playing the guitar did for Leadbelly in this regard.

Dramatization of the incident, from the 1976 Leadbelly movie:

Irrelevant note: Michael Cooney wrote that he was approached to dub in the 12-string guitar for this movie (he's got the Leadbelly style to perfection). Cooney would record the guitar tracks, another African-American musician would play "Leadbelly's hands" in the close-ups, and Roger Mosely, who played Leadbelly in the movie, would pantomime playing guitar as best he could. Cooney declined the offer, but they obviously got someone to mimic Leadbelly's 12-string licks, as well as the "hands closeup" musician.

Now, something serious for the OP: does your "neighbor" know your probation status, and what the risk is for you if he/she brings "something illegal" into your house? Lots of humor in this thread, but the consequences of a thoughtless act like this could be pretty serious. As an ex-police department employee, had some experience of how a momentary lapse in judgment, can result in permanent damage.

You dodged a bullet this time, but chances of dodging every bullet in a fusillade, well, ain't that good. Little heart-to-heart with that neighbor, would be my advice. IMHO, discretion is by far the better part of valor, and not too many immediate pleasures, are worth giving up your freedom, even if it's only for a short time.

Spot on Allen H, Its as if Trev's neighbour brought a live snake into his trailer only one who got bit was Trev.

It was only due to the kindness and concern of the Parole Officer that you are free. I would have chewed you
out for being so daft as well. Other people like your neighbour don't think what trouble it will cause for you.and probably couldn't care less as well. Learn from it Kev we like you being free.

This is from a Dad of five and Grandad of nineteen (at the moment).

Just so everybody knows, my neighbor didn't know I was on probation. It's an embarrassing thing to tell people... I almost didn't even make this topic because of it.

Also, my mandolin pickers fakebook arrived today! :D
