Patience...

I learned Patience on the guitar back when the song came out in late '88 early '89.

I brought my mandolin with me so I could practice during my lunch hour.

Well for the heck of it, I decided to play around and pulled Patience completely out of the air and got it right on the first shot.

I just kept thinking to myself, "What would Axl Rose have done on stage if he had heard this on the Mandolin?"

That's got me wanting to work out the classic intro to "Sweet Child O' Mine" on the mando. Anyone know the key?

For some reason, the Key of D comes to mind. But keep in mind that Guns and Rose's usually tunes down a ½ step.

You know I have to admit that I do not know of any tab or even bother with it.

I always play by ear.

It would be easier for me to send you the chords.

a bunch of months ago, i got up with a guitarist at an open mic who asked if i knew "patience" i told him, no but play it and i'll try to pick along and just did some tremolo and fill stuff the whole way through- really pretty!

Hi Ira,

The cords are pretty basic. C, G, A, D.

The chords on the chorus are as follows:

C,G,C,E C,G, D & variations of Dsus.

I hope this helps out.

Let me know how successfully you are. Also keep in mind that this song is tuned down to an Eb.

thanks for the info.
ok, i get the chords, but not sure what you mean by tuned down to an Eb- does that mean i would need to tune my mando down a 1/2 step or play everything down a 1/2 step? (sorry if this seems like a dumb question).

Unless you are F.J., a guy that I went to highschool with many moons ago, there is no such thing as a dumb question

To answer your question, "Yes" you would need to tune down your mandolin or guitar a half step.

Mando- Gb, Db, Ab, & Eb
Guitar- Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb & Eb

I hope this gets you started. If you have the CD, this would help. There are lot's of "little licks" that are happening in the song. Also keep in mind there are 3 different guitar parts going on.

I'm sure you will figure it out....
