    Default Mandola Fingerstyle?

I just bought a mandola and find it quite difficult to play after 10 years of mandolin (which is very comfortable for me). It's not the fretting, but the picking. All my picked notes sound so muffled and murky compared with the cleanness of my mandolin. When I use just my fingers instead, I can hear the strings much louder and clearer, even if there's a tinge of ukulele to the sound. Any hints/tips on properly picking mandola?

BTW, mandola is a Woodley H1 replica with J72 strings. It had Jazzdola strings on it from the previous owner but I found them unbalanced sounding.
