When I visited Steve last year he told me he works on 18 at a time. He doesn't have CNC but he does have a good copy router and runs a very well organised workshop. I think some of this and his rationale for doing so is covered in the interviews:

Locked away on a hard drive. I should be able to get my hands on it around October.

    Hopefully.

I assume this is the batch due in Oct. for the Carter's order? If so, one of 'em is mine. I ordered a tone bar/red spruce. I've got an x-braced/engelman. I plan to keep the one I like most and sell the other.

Me too, it is #1 on the bucket list! Even if I were rich beyond my wildest dreams I don't think I could bring myself to purchase an original Lloyd Loar F5. No problem with a Gilchrist though!

Based on that photo of the mandos on Steve's rack, looks like the fern is still prevalent. It was in the Summer 2012 batch, if I recall correctly.

I hear ya! I want another F5 like you read about! But at this point in life I just can't justify having that much $$ tied up in one mandolin. Maybe in a few more years I'll get another. But for now a Model 1 scratched the Gil itch pretty nicely.

yes, I got quite close to a model 1. I'm very happy with my mandolins, but those Gilchrists are something!

I kind of wonder if one of those two A5s are coming to Richmond. Not my story to tell. . .

Is it just me, or does that headstock appear too small compared to the rest of the body?

Very special indeed. Somehow you're channeling the idea that that BIG box with the curly cue and sound hole is destined for you..

It's interesting that the used Gils sell the same or very close to the new ones. Carter's has a 2008 for $22K, and a 20 year old one just hit the classifieds at $21.5K. Are there any other makers whose used mandos command as high a resale as a Gilchrist? Must be the HIGH DEMAND for the over 700+ Gils out there that keep the prices high. MASS HYPNOSIS? Band Wagon?

Asking price and selling price are two different things.....
