Default What category to search - Gypsy/Romanian folk?

Not being a music history major - I'm asking for enlightenment on where & what to search for to find the traditional "wagons around a campfire" gypsy styled tab/notation.., I'm not sure where to start in the "Music by Genre" forum of the Cafe.

    Klezmer?

    Thanks in advance...

Roma do by nature travel a lot, so Gypsy by definition has a lot of countries musical influences
depending on where they are ..
    writing about music
    is like dancing,
    about architecture

    Mandroid,

True - and I didn't mean to over-generalize. I think I know enough to admit that I don't know enough..., hence my request.

To try and narrow the particuar "sound" I'm trying to find, I really dig the slow, almost waltz like melodies where the lead instrument (usually a fiddle) is expressing without words loss, desire, anguish, longing...

That may have not helped at all, but that's the best I can do...

Try Klezmer in the Mandozine Tef section. It's not exactly what you're looking for but it will point you in the right direction.

You could look under the umbrella term of "Balkan music," which encompasses a number of national styles around the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe that are descended from Turkish music. If you're interested in the theory stuff, look up the "Maqamat," which is the Turkish modal system that is also shared with Arabic music.

Taraf de Haïdouks is my favorite Romanian gypsy group. Check the violin solo that happens after the 6:30 mark; is this what you're talking about?

I printed this book out a long time ago and occasionally pick a tune out of it when I want that Balkan sound:

Check out Djangobooks.com, the best source online for Gypsy Jazz, Gypsy and other music. Also try our social group here. If you can bring yourself to read notation or just want to see the chords, this book is the best free source of gypsy (and jazz, swing, other stuff Django did).

    Paleo,

If only my fingers were that nimble! Thanks for that, and the links. I took a quick tour of the "Maqamat" page, and that will probably be something for several rainy days. Se-ver-al.

    You could try this one:

I think it has that Romanian/Gypsy sound. Whatever emotion, depends on how it's played.
