    Default Schatten Design mandolin pickup

Has anyone tried the Canadian-made Schatten Design mandolin pickup? Their banjo pickups get good reviews, but I haven't heard about the ones for mandolin. Easy to mount and price seems reasonable.

I have an older Schatten piezo small rectangle pickup that is attached via putty onto the soundboard and hooks up to a Carpenter jack. It worked very well for me, and could be changed out among different mandolins. Always ran it thru a preamp & sounded good (well, good enough). I installed K&K's in my main "amplified" mandolin & haven't used it in a while...

I've had installed, their Utility pickup , it seems Fine and doesnt cost much .http://www.schattendesign.com/PDF/Catalog.pdf

Looks like the SJAplus adds a volume pot,* but as source is still a passive Piezo,
knob just reduces the signal strength, and so volume, conveniently, on the instrument.
so a Preamp is also part of the rest of the signal chain need.

    * part of the Strip you attach to the side of the Mandolin-bridge + Carpenter jack, set, offered.

The Gypsy Jazz guitar folks on the Djangobooks.com forum have expressed a high opinion of the Schatten HFN-S2.

Thanks all! I'm seriously looking at one for both my tenor banjo and mandolin because they're (a) reasonably portable, and (b) I can get locally.

Hey yawl, just got a Schatten M 05 pickup. Been futzing around with it his afternoon. They recommend attaching on the upper portion of the bridge, on the endpin side. I did so but didn't like the way it sounded, too brassy and tinny. So I moved it around on the top and like it best just below, and parallel to, the e string behind the bridge. I still would much prefer a mic, but am going to be playing with a drummer at a wedding. I expect I will blend my signal with a mic, maybe 2/3 mic and 1/3 pickup.

Has anyone out there had experience with pickup placement using the Schatten? I'd welcome any recommendations.

    Thanks in advance.

Piezos still need a mega ohm buffered pre amp next, in the signal chain.. you have a pre amp too?

yes, I have a fire-eye. I also ran it through a Fishman Loudbox. Looking at the specs, the Fire-Eye seems to match up well with the Schatten.

I guess I was really surprised that it sounded so harsh placing the pickup where the maker said to.

    thanks for you comment,

Well at least you will 'cut through' ..
it would be the loudest site..

Stew Mac had these for a lot cheaper at the time, I got one installed inside My Mandola .

For sound quality Once I Got a Scherler Dyn M, I stopped thinking about installed pickups

[except the A5 Mix that had the same pickup, installed version in it already ]
