The cases for these multi-necked instruments (if they exist) would be akin to that of a bass? Too much weight and bulk for me! And getting one on an airplane?

Yeah would have to be a custom case. However if it was the size of Irvines Bassouki, it could work

There is another option for a double neck instrument that is not so wide, such as the guitar(s) that Thomas Bresh has. Anyone seen one like this built with mandolin family instruments?

Personally I find changing between instruments to be not that much of a problem to warrant such an awkward instrument.

No, but that’s the shape of the neck of my first acoustic, after I replaced the nylon strings with metal….

This. I used to gig switching between cittern, bodhran, and snare drum, all while standing. Problematic? Nope - you do what you have to.

I have corresponded with Roger Bucknall regarding my dream of a double necked guitar/mandolin. Six string regular guitar, 8 string regular mandolin.

    The ultimate jam tool.

Similar to my situation of switching between OM, guitar and bodhran, although I typically play seated. Sometimes add a tenor banjo for an extra dimension. No real problem at all.

Im interested in the possibility of switching mid song and also not funding two instruments. Its not about carrying more than 1 instrument around

Also consider getting a back-brace with any multi-necked instrument - they are awkward, cumbersome, and heavy...

Buy a 6/12 string Ovation electro-acoustic, restring the 12 into a 10 string cittern (nut change maybe all you'd need), and have a luthier mod the 6 into a 8 stringed zouk. Add capo, and Bob's your uncle?

DISCLAIMER: It's quite possible I have no idea what I'm talking about, and defer to those with more experience and/or luthier skills.

I guess it's traditional once a thread like this goes far enough, to post the Pikasso guitar that Linda Manzer made for Pat Metheny:

It looks like the top headstock was removed, or folded back?

This all goes to show, given sufficient funds, you can have anything your heart desires made by a luthier.

I recall a picture of Jimmy Pages tripple neck acoustic... a 6 & 12 string guitar with a Mandolin neck sticking up at 2 o'clock several years back in an issue of "Acoustic Guitar"

Bill Baily said this was originally a 7 neck - one for each day - and that he had to get the Luthier to remove the one for Sunday as it got woodworm:

Here is a novel solution: the roto-neck. I would think you could have two different scale lengths by placing the nut on each side at different positions and adjusting the frets accordingly.

    Back of neck view

Pro: Would fit in a regular guitar case. Con: Solid body.
