I have worked it out but only by ear, HERE is an earlier thread where I posted a version of the chords.

    Such a great song!
I should be pickin' rather than postin'

Thanks very much. I have geeked out to this song many times. Great one for a long drive.

As Thile says (his first time playing it with Hartford), "gosh, that's twisty!"

I love this tune, also, but have not been able to pick it up by ear. Baron Collins-Hill of mandolessons.com (and poster here) has a nice solo mandolin version. It may be easier to pick up from that video, for people who are more skilled than me. I hope that one day he will do a lesson of Homer the Roamer, but I think John Hartford wrote it, so that may complicate things.

Have you heard Mike Compton play it? It's magical!

He's on the version that is on the "Memories of John" album, which is excellent, but I would love to hear Mike Compton do it solo. The fiddle player on that album seems to be Matt Combs, and he had a fiddle version of HtR on his website for awhile, that was also really good.

There was a time when I was collecting versions, hoping for one simple enough to learn from. Thinking back that was before I learned about slow-downing software...

Darol Anger recorded an excellent version of this tune recently. Joe Walsh is on mandolin.

Based on all your tips, I think I was able to piece it together for the most part. I used to slow downer program with the Hartford Thile version and the Memories of John version. Here is my early stab at it, first slow so the notes can be picked up easier by someone else, then closer to full speed. Let me know what you think.
