Default A shout out to Matt Flinner

I learned about Matt Flinner's online classes in a Cafe ad last spring. I've taken two classes and really like them.
These classes work very well for me and Matt is an excellent teacher. He is thorough and very supportive, which ain't a bad thing!
I'm signed up for Swing Mandolin in January and looking forward to it.
    NFI of course. -Robert

I agree, the classes I’ve taken have great content and are very well structured.
Matt’s sessions helped my mandolin playing a lot.

I've taken bluegrass 101 & 102 from Matt and loved both of them. He is a great teacher and is very patient and encouraging to his students.

This BG101 course has been very helpful.

I couldn't agree more with your thoughts about Matt's patience and his ability to teach with humility and caring sentiment- few people are such good teachers as well as practitioners of their pursuits.

I am really looking forward to BG102 next time around. Hope to see ya there, Robert.

I am very interested in the Swing class also, but can you comment on the logistics of the class? I looked at the curriculum, but it didn't say much about the details.

Is it one hour every Tuesday night? What time? I assume he will be in either East Coast or Central time zone. The advert said the classes were beginning on Jan 6 and 7, so does he do it two nights in a row?

    Thanks.

Teak, looks like the Swing class is on Tuesdays and the Old Time class is on Wednesdays. Class start at 8:00 and most of the time goes over the hour, usually about 1 1/2 hours and occasionally almost two. Matt goes above and beyond what I expect from his as an instructor. Saturdays have a practice session either at 10:00 or 11:15 depending on which class you're in. He usually throws in an extra review of the whole class at the end. Works out to be around $21 per session so it well worth the money. The class is conducted over the Citrix Go to meeting software, you can google that for more info. I've taken 101, 103, and just finishing 102. I will most like sign up for the Old Time course.

    Nashville time Teak. [cst]
All the worksheets and songs can be printed out.
All the classes, practices, songs and work pieces are taped
and can be watched and downloaded to be watched over and over.
If you have a weird work schedule like I do you can go to the
site later and take the full class then. The only difference is you
can't ask Matt a question right then. But Matt makes himself
very accessible through the site for any questions. There's a
Forum for the students. You can send MP3's for Matt or everyone
to hear. There's more but you get the idea. Lot's of bang for the buck.

It is a tribute to the quality of Matt's instruction to read all the good words from fellow students.

I have to add my accolades for Matt as a teacher. I've just finished up my second course with him, BG 102. Like anything else in life, you get out of it what you put into it. He gives you an abundance of material with each lesson to open many possibiities and doors that you may not have explored before. It helps to be computer or Ipad saavy to take full advantage of the technology he uses. The beauty is that all the lessons and practice sessions are promptly posted to replay after the fact, so if you live a busy life and can't make a session, no problem. I've only been able to attend about half the sessions live and still feel like I have fully participated and not missed a thing. His practice backup MP3's can be downloaded and are great to play along with. If you are on the fence, go for it. You won't regret it.

I've taken 2 of his classes and echo everything said above. His classes are really well organized and he is a good teacher. Most important I get the sense that he really enjoys the sessions. Most of the sessions run over by 15-30 minutes. Plus a Saturday practice session is included. It's great deal.

I've just completed BG 101 and can't say enough good things about Matt. Great teacher. Very patient. Every class went long as he continued to teach and interact with the students. Encouraged everyone to upload mp3s for him to talk/discuss with you. Maybe best of all, Matt never shows off. You don't get the dazzling, play at a thousand miles an hour "aren't you impressed with me" bit some teachers seem compelled to do. There's none of that. Matt plays slowly and carefully and demonstrates good relaxed technique. He isn't trying to show how great he is ... that humility and interest in what the students need is really commendable, imo.
that ain't no part of nothin'!

What playing level are these lessons geared to?
