Emanuel Shenykman
Has anybody listened to his "The Art of the Mandolin" record he did with a classical guitarist of some stature. Emanuel was also a great domra player. On the cover it looks like he is holding an F-2 or an F-4, it is a drawing.
There are a lot of numbers by Russian composers. This was the first time I ever heard Shostakovich's "Romance", from the film, "The Gadfly". We play this in the Long Island Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra as a mandolin solo with orchestra.
There is also a number called "Old Romance" that the Hall of Fame balalaika player, Leonard Davis, likes to play. Just a lot of tremelo!

Weirdo a pizzico
Re: Emanuel Shenykman
A fine player with somewhat bizarre taste. I have his album entitled something like "Russian Folk Instruments: Mandolin." His ensemble's choices for instrumentation are sometimes a little weird.

I love it, beautiful playing.
I don't know the other record Eugene mentioned.

Weirdo a pizzico
Re: Emanuel Shenykman
Here's the cover of the album I own (sorry, the original scan much reduced for the iTunes library). You can see the Roman characters clearly give his name as Emmanuil Sheinkman in this case.
