"Danger! Do Not Touch!" must be one of the scariest things to read in Braille....
It's on my watch list... but pretty unlikely.
I bought it. I just love Fylde mandolins.
It will compliment my Fylde Single Malt, I hope it sounds as good!!!

The Fylde Single Malt instruments are made from re-cycled whisky vats and wash back vessels from the Talisker Distillery on the Isle Of Skye, this where the unique colour comes from.
Great whisky too.

Are you sure its a blowlamp? I thought that they set fire to the inside of new barrels in order to seal them.
The tops are not burnt at all, the colouring comes from holding hot liquids over many years service at Talisker.
Using a blowlamp would seriously harm the wood.

Two different woods in these mandolins: the back and sides are from old oak barrels. If I understand whisky lore correctly, these are used three times -- first as new oak in bourbon (which is where the charcoaling of the inside comes in), then as sherry casks and finally as Scotch single malt casks. The tops, however, aren't from barrels at all and therefore haven't been burned at all. They are made from pine reclaimed from an old washback vessel at the Talisker distillery.

This thread about a Single Malt guitar from the Acoustic Guitar Forum suggests that a blowtorch may be used on the oak back/sides, but not the top. It also says that the burn marks on the top sections come from the steel bands that hold the staves of the washback vessel together.
In the July 2014 Fylde newsletter, there is a guitar with a redwood top that has been gently "shaded" using a blowtorch, so it can be done.

According to Roger the Oak arrives with burn marks but they largely get sanded off during construction. A little creative work with a blowtorch gets the colour back where it started.
I have a beautiful Fylde Goodfellow guitar made from the single malt materials, the best acoustic I've ever owned.
I can't believe it, an oval hole that has some chop. This lucetta is stunning to play and has an incredible amount of power.
Just what the doctor ordered!!!

Yes! Read my posting called (My Tale Of Woe) in General Mandolin Disc.
It hurts me to sell it but I can't live with what I hear. It's me and not the mandolin that is at fault...

I had one of these when they were carved top and back, my hearing was better 15 to 20 years ago as well so with the carved mandolin and better hearing in mind I thought I'd get another.
It does really does break my heart to sell it as I love Fylde mandolins. (I do still have one though).
