Thread: Early onset MAS

    Default Early onset MAS

I have a wonderful new student. She's a 14 year old beginner guitar player. She has a nice little Gretsch acoustic. At her lesson this weekend (her fourth lesson), she said that she liked her guitar, but was interested in getting another, and wondered about her options.

I already knew from her attitude and progress that she will do well as a musician. This just proves she'll end up as one of us. She has one of the earliest cases of MAS I've ever seen.

You need to explain to her that there is a real difference, tone-wise, between a D18 and a D28, so she won't be happy unless she gets both!

Not to nit-pick, but wouldn't this technically be GAS?

I thought that MAS was Musical Acquisition Syndrome. I know mine has been diagnosed with multiple manifestations. I haven't had GAS in years, well, except...

So, now she needs a nice mandolin so she can ditch that (*shudder*) guitar!

MAS is typically Mandolin Acquisition Syndrome, although I'm liking the Musical Acquisition Syndrome; it does cover a lot, for those of us with pretensions of playing more than one instrument.

Really, only seven. How about a Collings or a build? Or a Martin from the year you graduated from high school like I'm looking to own some day.

Obviously, the girl needs a mandolin or two, too.
Quite possibly a banjer also, for when the other stuff is in the shop.
And y'know, she's going to get curious about fiddles too.
