    Default My new Trillium Octave

This falls under the "go big or go home" category. For my very first (and probably final) octave mando, I snagged a Trillium, made by Bob Abrams. I felt confident in the quality, based in large part on the recommendations here on the Cafe. So, anyway, I've only had it since Saturday, but I am loving it. It's got a fir top and oak back and sides--so slightly unusual--but beautiful and great sounding--materials. Here are a few pictures.

IMHO, oak is an under utilized wood. Nikso Appolonio made a lovely bell cittern out of oak, highlighted in this video:

Congrats on the new acquisition! It is a lovely instrument indeed! I purchased a second hand Trillium recently and am likewise extremely pleased with its sound and playability. Welcome to the Trillium owners club.

Congrats! Bob's work is terrific, and he's a totally good guy too. Was sorely tempted by a redwood top OM a few years back, it sang so pretty.

    Hello Rosemary,

I was first in line to buy this octave but just didn't have the funds. It's beautiful and I'm sure it's a wonderful sounding OM. I've been selling some instruments so I think I'm ready for his next one. I was wondering if you have any sound clips available? Would like to hear what it sounds like. Enjoy! Greg

Okay, here's a video clip, with mistakes and everything! This instrument really is wonderful. Someday I hope to do it justice...

I'm having problems viewing the video. It says I have to sign in? I'm sure you do the OM justice.

[QUOTE=Rob Zamites;1388452]IMHO, oak is an under utilized wood. Nikso Appolonio made a lovely bell cittern out of oak, highlighted in this video:

Oak tends to be brittle and subject to cracking, especially when milled to the dimensions required for instrument building. It's open pore structure, though lending to strength and flexibility, can allow rapid expansion and shrinkage. However, finished well and properly maintained it can give the owner years of pleasure! I've always enjoyed the beauty of it.
