Default Minnesota Mando Jam...Need you to vote on a date!

Ok folks, I have permission from Blackbird Music (corner of Cedar and 35th Ave. in Mpls, kitty corner from Matt's Bar--the home of the juicy lucy) to schedule a jam for mandolins only.

While I'd love to be able to find the ideal day when EVERYone can come, I think that it will be easier if I pick two dates and we can choose between them.

Currently, Wednesday is the best date: the store is staffed and nothing is happening in the evenings except some lessons in the back. So what about Wednesday, May 20th?

Alternately, while the store is currently closed on Mondays, Charlotte said that they would be happy to open it and make it available to us. So then what about Monday, May 18th?

Cast your votes. Majority rules. No particular genre will be focused on: if you can play it and we can jam on it, we'll do it. If we enjoy ourselves and get enough people maybe we can do it on a regular (once a month? once every couple weeks?) basis.

Never done a Mandolin-only jam! (To be honest, it was the prevalence of guitar-only jams that made me quit guitar and take up the mandolin!)

Wednesdays are usually our band's rehearsal night (because it's often my only free night of the week!). And we're playing at the MBOTMA kickoff fest at El Rancho the weekend of May 29-31, so it's gonna feel like we're cramming for an exam. So, that wednesday's out, but the occasional wednesday would be good.

That monday (I'm guessing you mean the 18th) my son has a soccer game.

Now you know my life story.

Well, dang. 2 strikes LOL. I'll see what the rest of the gang says. If we don't have enough, I'll suggest a couple more dates.

Mando-only jams are fun! I've done a few. I don't think I'd want to make a regular habit of it; I enjoy the interplay of other instruments too much. But it's a kick once in a while.

And yeah, I meant the 18th. I changed it. Thanks!

Monday, the 18th, works for me. But so far it would be just two of us, another time may be better for more mandolin players.

Guess I'll have to call in sick on the 18th, but count me in. But be nice, I'm really still a beginner...

Ok, we got 3 for Monday, 5/18, and plenty of time to boost that. Let's give it a couple more days.

well, looks like they had a rescheduling for my kid's soccer game, so I might be able to make it on the 18th... Was just wondering whether you were thinking about an evening thing, or a daytime thing. (Since you mentioned the store was closed, wasn't sure.)

But I could probably do a 7pm-ish kinda deal.

Ok, let's see what Monday, 5/18, around 7 p.m. looks like. I'll contact Blackbird Music (35th and Cedar on the NE corner next to the Corcoran Community Center) and see if they'd be willing to be open to us from, say, 7-9 p.m. More mando pickers would be cool, too! Invite 'em if you know any. I'll take to FBook for those that don't do the Cafe.

I may have a conflict that night as an unexpected visitor is coming from out of town. It isn't 100% sure, but it turns out not to happen, I will be there. I didn't know this when I said I could come. Sorry if I have to miss this.

Monday May 18 does not work for me. But I like the idea. Keep working the dates. Something will happen.

Ok, we have a critical mass of mandos committed from the Cafe, so Monday, May 18th is the date. They'll open the shop up at 7:00 p.m. for us (it's not usually open on Mondays) and we'll see what we see. It's open to all ability levels and all genres: we'll wing it and see what the hell happens. We may even be able to break up into 2-3 jams. Feel free to post on FB or wherever. Maybe we can get that shop full. Charlie, Doug: I'm sorry if the 18th doesn't work but if this winds up being fun, I'll take names and #'s and we'll try to do it again real soon.

are you still doing the general jam on Thursday nights? I may come to that. I don't mind other instruments

Though a mando only jam could be fun as well. Monday the 18th at 7pm works for me. But hopefully we can find a date that works for all.

Yep, the Thursday "bluegrass" jam still runs along, 7-9. It's not hardcore, mixes in lots of old-time, a blues number or two, and whatever else people feel like bringing.

As for the date, well I would love to find a date that EVERYone could make but in the interest of starting somewhere, I figured I'd pick one and just go with it. I don't see a mando-only jam as a weekly thing. Maybe if we enjoy it we could do it monthly or something but for right now, it's just a lark, a chance to meet some other mando folks and swap some tunes. I'm advertising on FB and Charlotte at Blackbird is advertising in the store as well. It's possible we could get a respectable crowd there.

the blackbird page says that the Thursday night jam is on hiatus, so I was not sure.

Huh--that may be old info. Last summer, I played a farmer's market every Thursday. These days I have students on Thursdays before the jam so I'll be there!

I'm fully committed (my wife says I should be committed, really) to Monday the 18th at 7. I'll see if I can rope a couple other nutjobs into it, but I'm happy with barely a quorum.

An all-mando jam?! Count me in. I always felt that the Grisman Quintet coulda used more than two mandos, so it's right up my alley...
