I'm using a plain black flat leather Levy's + a leather lace - strap is too short without lace added. Cheap.
But with lace I can do adjustments galore - still experimenting.
Having any strap is better than no strap, for me.

My apologies for resurrecting this thread, but figured it was better to post here than start another strap thread.
It appears that I am in need a a very thin leather strap for my 1912 F-4. The scroll on mine is might tighter than other F mandolins I have seen and none of the typical F-style straps will fit through the scroll. I would prefer a strap that anchors on the scroll rather than at the headstock.
So far I've tried Lakota and Walker & Williams straps but they are all too thick.
The Walker & Williams strap button headstock adapter is just thin enough to fit through and right now I'm using it in conjunction with a strap to work, but would ultimately like to achieve a more professional look.
Anyone make a thin strap, or am I best off trying to have something made from scratch?
Leather can be sanded and shaved. The easiest would be sanding. A belt sander would be your best choice. GO SLOW. A rounded sanding block would also work. I had to do that for my 1915 F4.

The older I get, the less tolerant I am of political correctness, incompetence and stupidity.
My 1913 F2 has the same issue. I used a short length of matching leather boot strap through the scroll then tied to the (Lakota) strap.

There's a seller on Etsy who has very nice leather straps. I bought the one shown at this link, but in black leather for my Kentucky KM-1000B.

Little Satchel straps have a very thin loop for the scroll. I believe Carters sells them.

Couple of ideas:
I don't believe in sticking with one strap. The strap is a lot like a mans tie from when men had to wear ties. It was that little bit of visual expression.
Sometimes I buy a new strap because I really want to buy a new mandolin, but I haven't the resources, or the justification. A way of exercising impulse control affordably.
As I mentioned I use guitar straps because I don't think there is anything so unique about a mandolin, even an F, that requires a special strap.
I am a big fan of Couch brand straps. But more recently I just enter "guitar straps" into Etsy, and oh my what a wonderful selection, from sublime to ridiculous.
I had a similar problem with an F-5 scroll and found that the Little Satchel kangaroo straps (http://www.gilchristmandolins.com/accessories) worked well.
I wound up ordering a vintage strap from Sullys Straps (https://sullysstraps.com/vintage-str...ndolin-straps/) that also works and looks great. He can make the leather loop thinner if you ask him.

I like the Sully strap. Use both F and A styles. If you let him know what you're looking for, he can probably make a strap with thinner leather for the scroll.

I would recommend the Lakota Leather Elk Leather Strap. It's gorgeous and soft.
